  • Volume 56 Number 8 Sports The Western Carolinian Page 7 Thursday, October 4, 1990 Sziksai ends slump; Defense keys 20-7 win over Lions Tony Bolick Sports Editor Western Carolina used a big second half to open up a tight game with a stubborn Mars Hill squad to win 20-7. The largest crowd in the 1990 home season of 10,271 people entered E. J. Whit- mire Stadium to witness the Mountain Heritage Day game. The win raises Western's record to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The win was the second in the midst of a three week homes- tand which will culminate Saturday in a conference homecoming showdown against the 18th ranked Bulldogs from The Citadel. Last week, The Bulldogs were the victims of a 27-9 upset at the hands of the Appa- lachian State Mountaineers in Boone, N. C. Throughout the night, Mars Hill proved what kind of an improved team Coach Felton Stephens had brought to Cullowhee. The Lions outgained Western in total offense for the game 436-277 and led in time of possession, 31:46 to 28:14. A 59 yard punt return late in the first half, an end to the field goal slump and four interceptions helped to stop the Lions and set-up Western Carolina scores. "The interceptions by Stanley Marrow and Myron Sharpe were two key plays that took away Mars Hill's momentum." said Coach Steve Hodgin. "Our 3-2 record is a frustrating 3-2. We've got a great bunch of ball players, but I'm frustrated that we're not playing better than we are," he added. "We've been winning ugly, but that beats the heck out of losing pretty." The game began as a defensive struggle with each team trading possessions. Western was inconsistent on offense while the Lions quickly showed the talent and experience that they had brought to Western. On their first possession, the Lions quickly crossed midfield and drove across the Catamount's 40 yard line, but the drive stalled and the Cats got their first break of the game. On fourth down and three, too far for a field goal, Chris Green shanked a punt for a negative three yard net punt. Quarterback Derrick Harris quickly put the Catamount offense back on track. Completing three big-yardage passes in a row, Harris quickly drove die Cats deep into Mars Hill territory with a first down on the Lions' 11 yard line. Penalties, however, plagued the Cats, and a holding call dropped the offense all the way back to die 21 yard line. The Cats would not be denied. Harris rolled right on the next play and gained all die lost yardage back down inside the 5 yard line. The Lion defense held and Western failed to score a touchdown. On fourth down, the coaches called on Jimmy Sziksai, who come through with his first collegiate field goal, a 24-yarder giving Western a 3-0 lead. The field goal was the first one since Clay Cox kicked one in the second quarter of the Furman game last year, over 30 quarters. Since that game, die kickers had gone 0- 7; Sziksai had been 0-3. Both offenses continued to struggle, although Mars Hill was finding more success than Western. The Lions would finally break through midway into the second quarter, scoring their first points in the series since 1981. It only took five plays. Startingfrom their own 29, die Lions ran around the right side for a gain of four. On second down and six, quar terback Jeff Bailey and running back Johnathan Byers executed the flea- gave the Lions fifteen more yards and a first down on die Western Caroiinian Photo by Jon t-omtow Kell Helms (bottom) and Julius Grant (#40) tackle the MH Lions' Johnathan Byers (#30) to lead the Cats to a 20-7 win flicker to perfection but Bailey overthrew the pass to a wide open receiver, Derek Gibson, who was yards behind the Western secondary. After a run around the right side gave Mars Hill a first down, a personal foul penalty against WCU Carolina 39 yard line. Mars Hill ran the flea-flicker and this time it was not overthrown. The pass was slightly underthrown but fell complete into die arms of split-end Derrick Sharpe for a first and goal on the WCU one yard line. For the first time, the Lions came out of the huddle in their usual Power-I formation. Johnathan Byers took the handoff over the right side and into the endzone for their first touchdown against Western Carolina since 1967. With 8:06 to play in the first half, the Lions held the lead 7-3. They would come close but wouldn't score again. Each offense held a possession but failed to gain anything and with just over 1:30 to play until halftime, Mars Hill lined up to punt. When the 47 yard kick came down, Willie Williams sprinted down the left sideline 59 yards and gave the Catamount offense a first down in excellent field position on the Lions' 21 yard line. The first trick play for die Cats only got diem inside the 20. Derrick Harris found freshman Kevin Thigpen open on the left side on die next play and Thigpen took the pass down inside the ten for a first and goal. Three plays failed to get the ball into the endzone. After a time- (See Cats Beat..., P 9) When you're tired of cramming for those nasty exams, do some cramming at THE PARKWAY RESTAURANT!
