IHI WISIIKN CAROLINIAN/July 3,W80/P«ge 5 ^AuckfMawaitMM from page 1 quick solo on the next song, "The 11th Commandment" from the "Feels So Good" album, the quartet seemingly took turns in giving spirited solos, but always returned to Mangione for the finishing touches. The quartet flowed through the next number. "Chase the Clouds Away." slowing the crowd momentarily until the theme song from the 1980 Winter Olympics, "Give it All You Got." This led into "I Never Miss Anything More," from a couple of years ago, and then into the hysterical "Pina Colada and Me." Mangione showed a whole different aspect to his music on this one, as he, Vidal and Charles Meeks (bass guitar) started the song with VOCALS. Well,-sort of vocals,-they stuttered sorta', "Pi-Pi -Pin-Pin-Pi -Pin-Pina-Pina Colada," and they had the crowd stuttering too. Mangione ended the first set with the title song from "Fun and Games" which brought the crowd to its feet, literally During the last couple songs, a strange new beat emerged from the crowd, a new instrument even, "Tommy Fennimore on Trashcans." Fennimore was inspiring the crowd to new heights as he banged, kicked, and jumped on a nearby trashcan to the Quartet's rhythm. The crowd loved it. HE got a standing ovation as well as Mangione and was a type of "Cheerleader" for the rest of the concert. What Tommy Fennimore did. the crowtLdid. "I'm just a worshipper of him" Fennimore said, and indeed that is the way it seemed with the crowd. Through his first couple of songs in the second set the crowd seemed tense and waiting for the opportunity to burst loose. "Hide and Seek, Ready or Not, Here I Come" gave them the opportunity as Bass player Meeks led in with a soulful vocal intro, followed by several Vidal solos that had the cnowd "dancin' in the rain." The dancing continued straight through the rest of the show as Mangione's Emmy Award Winning song, "Bellavia," followed. This led into the "five piece version of the 115 piece version" of the "Children of Sanchez." Fittingly, the final songs were "Feels So Good," (you know, the Memorex song) and finally "Main Squeeze" as a rousing encore. Of course, it was dedicated to his main squeeze, his flugelhorn. Mangione's first stop on his summer tour was one that surprised everyone, especially Mangione. who was emphatic when he told the crowd, "You made this the beginning of a summer I'll love."

The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
