  • THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1976 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 7 Cats 6th in NCAA Div. II polls Western Carolina University's football team received notice this week that due to the Catamounts early 3-0 record, WCU had been ranked sixth in the nation in the NCAA Division II polls. This is the highest ranking for a Western team since the 1974 rankings when the Cats went 9-1 in regular season play and earned a berth in post-season playoffs. The national recognition is obviously great for the Catamounts, but the Western team is not without its problems going into the UT-Chattanooga game this Saturday. No less than three starters have been lost in the past two weeks with ankle injuries and it's beginning to be a serious situation. Starting Catback (flanker) Jeff Cic- cone was lost for from three to six weeks in Western's 21-14 win over Livingstone :Ala.) University two weeks ago" and two more key players suffered ankle injuries in last Saturday's close 13-10 win over Murray State U. Tailback Darrell Lipford, who has accounted for 352 yards rushing in two and a half games, is listed as "extremely doubtful" for Saturday niqht's 7:30 p.m. (EDT) game in WCU's Whitmire Stadium. Lipford has a severely sprained ankle. The Cats may also be missing Ty Smith, their starting nose guard who has accounted for 12 tackles, eight assists and two sacks. Smith has virtually the same injury as Lipford. "It goes without saying that losing those two players would hurt us a great deal," said WCU Head Coach Bob Waters. "We know UT-Chattanooga will be another big, strong team," Waters said. "They beat Illinois State 24-0 in their opener and played well against Western Kentucky. We know all about Western Kentucky and how tough they are. Chattanooga lost by just three points, 10-7, and anytime you play Western Kentucky that close, you've got to be good," Waters said. Both UTC and Western have been admitted to the Southern Conference and although neither is eligible for the league title this season, both figure Saturday's game as the beginning of their Southern Conference debut. "We're excited about our first intra-conference action and expect a good crowd and good game," said Waters. "When you're 3-0, it seems every game gets a little bigger. I'm certain we must improve over last week's performance to win." CAMPUS REPRESENTATIVES WANTED Sound $avings 18506N.E. 5th Ave. N. Miami Beach, Fla. 331 Chattanooga Head Coach Joe Morrison, whose Moccasins downed the Cats 27-6 last season, says "the elimination of mental mistakes" may be the key for his team against WCU. "Western has a quicker team than last year and has gotten off to a very, very strong start," said Morrison. "I know Coach Waters and the fine job that he does in getting a team ready to play. We've had good effort from our team as a whole and we'll need it again Saturday night." UTC has only given up 10 points in two games and the strongest part of their solid defense appears to be at the linebacking posts in starters Tim Collins (6-1, 225) and Stan Robbs (6-2, 210). Doug Elstedt, a 6-0, 175 junior, is the Moccasins' quarterback and runs the UTC split-back veer quite successfully. Meanwhile, Western displayed a new threat last Saturday night that could help offset Lipford's loss. After two grind-it-out wins, the Cats turned sophmore quarterback Keith Scoggins loose against Murray State and he linked up with split end Wayne Tolle- son in the "big-play" style that carried Western to success in past years under Waters.
