  • Thursday, February 15, 1968 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN ESP Becomes Phi Mu Colony By JANE HILL This past weekend was a memorable one for the former sisters of Epsilon Sigma Ph> Sorority for they were DleU«ed to Phi Mu Women's Fraternity, anatiooal sisterhood. Gamma Mu Colony of Phi Mu on our campus. The ceremony took place on Saturday night, Feb. 10 at the Methodist Church in Cullowhee. A social hour followed the formalities. The representatives from Brenau remained with Phi Mu Colony Pledges are: from left to right; top row, Carol Crudrup, Julie Bolick, Randy Bailey and Diane Worley; bottom row, Sandra Scot, Judy Schoolfield and Susan White. The National Executive Secretary, Miss Louise Horn,and a group of 14 Phi Mu's from the Mu Chapter at Brenau College came to WCU to establish the 'Fluid Ounces' Perform Here A March of Dimes Dance featuring the benefit performance of the "Fluid Ounces" will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 9:30 - 12:30 p.m. at Dodson Cafeteria. Tickets may be bought from any Brother of Alpha Phi Omega. Admission price is $1.00 per couple. their new pledges over the weekend and on Sunday all attended church services. After two quarters' work on becoming organized, the sisters of ESP were formally recognized at WCU on Jan. 29, 1967, when they were initiated on campus. Their charter was approved by the Administration on Jan. 24. Their founder is Frank Maturo of the Spanish Department. Mrs. Yvonne Stepp, their sponsor, is the wife of Dr. Hubert Stepp, of the Department of Economics who became their faculty advisor this year. The group which began with 10 charter sisters has now more than doubledin size with present membership at 22. Officers include: Donna Arrowood, President; Martha Keeves, Vice President; Alice Harkey, Secretary; and Phylis Best, Treasurer. After considering several national organizations, the KSl"s chose to pledge Phi Mu because their goals most nearly matched their own. The National Extension Director, Mrs. Steven G. Pugh, was the first Phi Mu to visit them on campus, bringing with her a movie, 'The Carnation Ball," filmed at the Phi Mu House at the University of Ga. The Phi Mu's, incidentally, are the only sorority to have ever produced a full color movie. The ESP's were passed to go Phi Mu on Feb. 7 through the Faculty Committee on Fraternities and Sororities, As of this weekend, they are well on their way to sisterhood in the second oldest college organization for women. Miss Elaine Kruger, the Phi Mu Field Secretary, flew in yesterday to be with the new pledges this week to help them with organization. The group was incorporated as Phi Mu Fraternity in 1904, and in 1911 the sorority was admitted to membership in National Panhellenic Conference, Today there are more than 100 Phi Mu chapters and colonic The Phi Mu colors are rose and white and their flower is the rose carnation. The open motto of the organization is the Faithful Sisters." The opening line of the Phi Mu's creed is, "To lend to Uiose less fortunate a helping hand," expresses their chief goal. In carrying out this ideal, the sis ters contribute to the s.S, Page 5 HOPE. They began the Health Mobile in Georgia, a service similar to Project Hope, though more local in scope, They also sponsor toy carts for chil- drens' wards in a number of hospitals. In addition to these national philanthropies, many chapters adopt orphans overseas, The Gamma Mu colony sponsors a child at the Western Carolina Center for Retarded Children at Morganton. The Phi Mu's are the fifth national sorority on the Western campus. And this colonization marks the first instance of national broth or- and Jdi- •nts part of the Creek expansion movement at WCU, and is indicative of the overall progress of our t Diversity.
