  • 2 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, May 20, 1971 YOUR OWN THING modern rock version of Twelfth Night By W. WAT HOPKINS Associate Editor There are intellectual plays. They make you think. There are emotional plays. They make you sad. There are quiet plays. They make you sigh Then there is YOUR OWN THING, the rock musical, now being produced by the Speech and Theatre Arts Department It doesn't make you think. It doesn't make you sad. It doesn't make you sigh. All it does is entertain youk and every now and then it is refreshing to be entertained. This Is not to say that the play is void of any theme or so-called message. The authors touch on individuality, homosexuality, free love, and middle-class America, and they make a statement on each subject They don't dwell on these topics, though, or push them too hard. They are treated lightly, and the result Is comedy. YOUR OWN THING Is a mod ernization of TWELFTH NIGHT, and when the term "modernization" is used, it is meant in every sense of the word. A kaleidoscope set, with projections onto screens, taped speeches by Everett Dirkson, John Wayne, W.C. Fields, and other notables, as well as uni> que lighting give the old mas ter's play a touch of the unreal like it has never seen. And the playgoer has to have this sense of the unreal if he is to believe that anyone could HAVE YOU EVER been at the wrong place at the wrong time? If not, just try to drive off campus about 4:30 in the afternoon, and you will see how easy it is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Internships open this summer for students Approximately 25 Internships will be open to students this summer, Mike Bowen, internship program director, has reported, if suitable students apply and "all the ends tie together." Dawson^ new duties on July 1 Robert Dawson, assistant dean Of men at WCU, will assume the position of Dean of Student Activities July 1. Uean i*v>son, who holds the master of education degree in educational administration from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. has been at WCU since July, 1970. to his new position Dean Dawson will serve as staff adviser to all student organizations. to addition, he will assist campus organizations and wUl help student groups to their presentation of big-name popular entertainment on the campus. Dean Dawson wUl retain the duties of International Student Adviser. The internships, which last* from ten to twelve weeks, carry academic credit, upon departmental approval, Bowen reports. Internships will be avaUable In the study of hunger and malnutrition, counseling of underprivileged, economic development for low income groups, veterans affairs, archival administration, county govern- ment, community relations, drug abuse, employment opportunities for minority groups and law and justice. Interested students should apply at 237 StUlwell. The phone number is 293-7170. T£D/ resTauram A SP£C/46 y -OPBN- 11-10.00 MOK'SAT 11-3^00 SUNDAY possibly mistake Nancy Ham- mill, who plays Viola, for a boy, no matter how much she and her twin brother look alike. Any member of the male audience could sit through the play and enjoy her performance, even if he didn't care that she could sing as well as act Viola is the better half of a twin, brother-sister act that is separated by a shipwreck in the opening scene of the play. They are only reunited after a series of events and round-about love affairs that confuses everyone involved. Viola ends upinlbyria.where she a.pplies tar, and receives a job as the fourth member of an all- male quartet, The Apocalypse. Continuing her guise as a boy, she falls in love with Orson, the manager, who returns the love, hesitantly at first, and is upset because of his discovered "latent homosexuality." Allen Freeman, masterfully handles Orson's dUemma. In the meantime, the other half of the duo. Sebastian, played by Marshall Whittier, began an affair with Olivia. Of course, Olivia was confused by the dual personality of "Charlie." But in the end, all knots were un- tied—or, rather, the correct knots were tied. , Dan Spaugh, David Hearst, Jr., and Din Holloman play the three original members of The Apocalypse, and, with the orchestra's backing, quite definitely make up the musical backbone of the play. Though most of the actors performed will with their solo numbers, none really reached his peak until he was singing with The Apocalypse. Poppy Re veil, as Olivia, displays her musical talents and Gary Waldron draws many laughs with his two bit parts. The only problems with the play are minor choreographic and diction bugs that are probably already worked out, since this review was of the final dress rehearsal. AND FURTHERMORE. . . . Viola (Nancy HammUl) seems to be telling her brother off here. And Sebastian (Marshall Whittier), like the good brother he is, yells back. YOUR OWN THING, an adaption (?) of TWELFTH NIGHT, and .1 n"' rn rock musical is being presented this week by the Speech and Theatre Arts Department Robert Ward speaks at Social Service meeting Robert H.
