8 WESTERN CAROLINIAN LETTERS TO THE EDITOR March 22, 2000 £ / \ I ? I ! Campus "Maturity Level" Dear Editor, I am a newly enrolled, non-traditional junior, majoring in history and art. I have a family; I'm employed by Southwestern Community College, and very active in my community. Finishing my degree has been a life-long dream and I am very excited to be doing it here at Western. Faculty and Staff have been more than supportive and accommodating. I am however shocked by some of the student's maturity level on campus. I have no problem with having a good time. It's an exciting time of your life and you should make the best of it, within limits of the law of course. My problem is the destruction of private property and the lack of respect for your fellow students, mainly in the art department. Recently a student's sculpture was to be entered in a competition in Waynesville, with the chance of winning a $500 cash prize. But that aside, this was an assignment for the course. Equate that to someone stealing a term paper that you slaved away over, stealing one of your books, or even worse, what if someone came on campus and stole every ball in Shocks Reader sight. That probably would get someone's attention. Instructors and students informed me that this kind of behavior was nothing new, it happens all the time. In most cases this kind of vandalism just goes unpunished ... well, it is only the art department. Our tuition is the same as everyone else, and then some. One of my pieces when it is finished will cost me an extra $ 100. We only have use of equipment in the studios, not access to unlimited supplies, which are costly. Should the administration call your mommies and daddies and let them know you've been bad? It probably wouldn't do any good because obviously they failed the first time around with you. We need to have the responsible students that witness these acts come forward and tell on these children. You can, and should do it anonymously, otherwise you're just as guilty. And then when it happens to you some day, and it will, don't expect much. Time to grow up children. Sincerely, Charlie Harshman Franklin, NC "Blaming Bardo" is Not the Answer to Tampon Woes Dear Editor, In response to Debbie Canape's letter from the March 1 publication of the Western Carolinian "Tampon supply a conspiracy" I believe that this is an issue that has never been satisfactorily resolved. Indeed, women's issues have been ignored for quite some time. The discontinued service of tampon dispensers coupled with not having a sign to inform a female why they have been discontinued is another example of ignoring women's issues. It seems that in order to get the administration to recognize these type of problems, women now have to work hard extra hard to influence them to address such problems. Blaming Chancellor Bardo and the administration will not solve the issue and we need to organize a group and work together to restart the service. I am sure we all have experienced the problem of finding empty tampon dispensers on campus. However, this experience should teach us to be prepared for unexpected situations. Refilling the dispensers will surely be a problem solved for those that are on the run with busy schedules. Sincerely, Lorraine I. Smiley Reader Encourages Community to Respect Environment Dear Editor, Jackson country is home to college students from Western Carolina University. Western is nestled in a thermal valley that says warmer than most mountain communities. Therefore it is able to support beautiful vegetation and some of the prettiest scenery around. Burning sunsets can be viewed from many places of higher elevation. One of the most popular places to observe Western's beauty is from the local airport. A shoulder was created on the side of the road to serve as an over look at Western's campus. Now look down. You will see beer cans, plates, bags of trash, and even an old plastic kiddy pool littering the steep hillside below. I think to myself, "Who threw out the first piece of trash starting this deadly chain reaction." We are not only killing the life surrounding this once beautiful area, but we are harming ourselves as well. Our roadsides are just as bad and that makes our community look bad also. As college students we should take small steps toward making improving our environment. Instead of throwing a bottle out the window, save it, then drop it in a recycling bin. If you see a wrapper on the ground, take 2 seconds of your time to drop it in the nearest trashcan. Let's start a new chain reaction and improve the looks of our campus. A Call to Arms Against Poor Food Service Dear Editor, Western Carolina University is constantly stating how they want students to stay on campus during the weekends and "experience Cullowhee" yet they can never seem to figure out why the students do not want to. The cafeterias have conducted focus groups in order to find ways to improve the food and University Housing has also offered a free meal to student participants who will give the school insight on why they want to move off campus. Shockingly to say, if any of the administrative officials were to eat at Brown Cafeteria, the only food place open on the weekends that serves more than chicken or subs, would find the answers to these stunning questions ... the poor food quality and service. Saturday, March 18 at 11:55 a.m., we went into Brown Cafeteria in high hopes of receiving a good meal that is not only nutritious but also more convenient for students who stay on campus during the weekend. We understand that when something is provided as a convenience item then there is usually a cost that goes along with it but we have never heard of sacrificing quality and service for it. Quality, service, and convenience are usually complimentary of one another but in this case quality and service have been replaced with horrible, distasteful food and horrendous service, therefore only leaving the conve nience aspect of cafeteria dining. For example, we had some cheese tortellini that we had just eaten there the previous Tuesday night and the tables were extremely nasty and crumb stricken not to mention also that the salt shaker had a PUBIC HAIR taking residence on the top of it. We were totally disgusted and outraged and now we are hoping to take control of this totally ridiculous situation. Western Carolina University requires all on-campus students to purchase a meal plan, which is totally overpriced because what I pay for three meals a day plus a snack equals usually $ 15 dollars or more a day. I can pay for all my food for the week on $ 15 dollars a week and still have money left even if I did not bargain shop. So here is our proposed plan to get some action taken in REALLY IMPROVING our food system at WCU instead of only "trying" to improve it. We want everyone including students, faculty and staff that are tired of putting up with bad customer service and horrible food to take a stand and fill out comment cards addressed to all dining facilities giving suggestions on how to improve and in demand of better food quality and service. The Western Carolina University community needs to combine forces to help make the food services better for not only us but for future prospects of WCU. S.A. Hallyburton How Come God Committed Abortion? Dear Editor, In response to Joseph E. Vallely, M. A., Counseling's letter of 3/15/00,1 would like to know if he also believes that all who have cursed their father and mother are "destining themselves to hell" as "God shouts" in Leviticus 20:9. Actually, Moses writes that they "shall be surely put to death." Mo' also scribes in Lev. 20:10 that "the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death." Must be a going to be crowded there. That guy who died on the cross said in Matthew 7:1 "Judge not, that ye be not judged, (2) For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." I often wonder if God is all knowing and all powerful, then how come he comitted abortion by letting his only begotten son be killed by a bunch of dudes who ran around in skirts and had homosexual and incestuous emperors?
