(Photos by James Carter) Good acting vs. weak writing A Review By DAN DIETZ I am of two minds about the University Little Theatre's current production, William Hanley' s SLO W DANC E ON THE KILLING GROUND I was extremely impressed with the Department of Speech and Theatre Arts' treatment of the play: fine acting, onobtruslve direction, and an interestingphy- sical production. On the other hand, I must regretfully state that the play itself is hardly worthy of the talents behind it. SLOW DANCE is a well- meaning, semi-liberal play about racial tensions in the New York City of 1962 (in fact, it takes place on the day Eich- marm was executed). Late one night, a German refugee, Glas CBrent Carter), is making an inventory of his Brooklyn candy store. He soon has a customer, Randall (David Hearst), a teenaged black youth who Is obviously in some kind of trouble, Both are eventually joined by a young woman, Rosie (Marsha Yowell), who literally stumbles into the store, having lost her way to an abortionist's, And, indeed, a not so funny thing happens to her on the way to the abortionist's since she comes upon two cultural and racial parallels who may or may not be ready to slit (literally and metaphorically) the other's throat Unfortunately, Hanley has not the writing talent to deal with 'so complex and delicate a theme as the racial one. Despite his good intentions, he is a novice at both philosophy and play- writing. Now I'll accept pseudo- CONTINUED Page 4.... Committee ponders calendar The Academic Calendar Committee has proposed a new calendar for the 1972-73 school year. The committee, headed by Cecil Brooks, will present the calendar to the Academic Af- fairs Committee as soon as Vice president Newton Turner has recuperated from a recent illness. The proposed calendar Is scheduled as follows: Fall 1972 Quarter (50 class days)-= August 31=September 1,1972, registration; September 4, classes begin; November 10, last day of classes; November 13-17, final examinations; Winter 1972-73 Quarter (51 class days)— November 28, registration; November 29, classes begin; December 15, last day of classes before Christmas; January 3, 1973, classes be • gin after Christmas: Caution I Linen Crest may be hanky panky Girls beware! Beware of high-pressure sales pitches from over-the-phone salesmen. There have been two off-cam- pus groups soliciting on campus without proper authorization says Robert Dawson, Dean of Student Activities, One company is LINEN CREST and the other Is FUTURE ENTERPRISES, both with bases in Indianapolis, Indiana. The salesman will call a certain floor, say fourth Scott for example, and ask to speak to the nearest senior girl. When she answers the phone he will tell her she has been chosen as hostess for a senior girl linen party in the case of LINEN CREST, and a bridal type shower in the case of FUTURE ENTERPRISES. He tells the senior that she can win a prize by having one of these parties, and then proceeds to tell her that a certain room will be open on a . specified date. This is all false. The salesman requests five dollars or so from each girl to pay for materials and other costs, The main problem here is that the girls, even unknowingly, may find themselves in trouble with the University because these "parties" are not authorized. These companies so far have not gone through the proper channels for securing the right to solicit on the campus, If their motives were cred- ible, they would have taken the proper measures, said Dean Dawson. The two mentioned above have been told to stay off campus. If necessary, a restraining order may be obtained to back this up. If you are contacted by any questionable company such as the above, please contact Dean Dawson's office immediately, February 23, last day of classes; February 26-March 2, final examinations; Spring 1973 Quarter (50 class days)-- March 9, registration; March 12, classes begin; April 20, last day of classes before Easter; May 25, last day of classes; May 28- June 1, final examinations; June 3, graduation. Summer Sessions will run from June 12 through July 13 and from July 17 through August 17, One major change in the proposed calendar is that Fall Quarter would end before Thanksgiving. Should the calendar go Into effect, the academic year would begin Fall Quarter three weeks earlier than this year and would end at approximately the same time as this year. Under the new calendar, students would begin three weeks earlier in fall, have an 11-day Thanksgiving and quarter break; return to Winter quarter classes for about three weeks, have a 17-day Christmas holiday, resume winter classes for about 7 weeks, have a 7-day quarter break; return to Spring classes for about four weeks, have a 10-day Easter holiday and return for about six weeks of class, Last night the Student Senate unanimously objected to the proposed calendar and asked Student Body President, Greg Lockamy, to express their objections to the Academic Affairs Committee when it meets to consider the plan, Lockamy is one of two student members of the committee, The other is Senator Steve Bailey, CONTINUED Page 4 -» o 9 o MEMBERS OF THE DRAMA department prepare for SLOW DANCE ON THE KILLING GROUND, which will be on in the Little Theatre through Saturday night.
