  • Page 4/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/ FEBRUARY 2, 1978 Acting Company brings 'life' to Hoey by JACK McNEELY Staff Writer Breathless chases, mistaken identities, and delightful songs will come to life onstage in Hoey auditorium Friday at 8:15, and on Sunday at 1 p.m., by the Acting Company from New York City. "Chapeau" is a new musical version of a classic French farce, "The Italian Straw Hat" by Eugene Labiche. It has an original score with music and lyrics by Alfred Uhry and Robert Waldman, who wrote "The Robber Bridegroom" which was nominated for a Tony Award. The story is about Gerard, and his difficulties on his wedding day. His horse eats the straw hat of an excitable lady during her illicit meeting with a soldier who immediately demands a replacement. Gerard leads his wedding party, containing his bride, her father, and hoards of anxious relatives, on a wild chase to a milliner's, a musical soiree at the Governor's mansion, and to a stranger's house, in search of a matching hat. Not only is there fine professional acting, but this amusing farce comes complete with singing and dancing. Ii is set in colonial Latin America, and includes the spirited new songs "Even for a Horse," "Take What You Will" and "Consider Yourself Married." Gerard is portrayed by Brooks Baldwin, and his innocent bride is played by Leslie Geraci. David Schramm and Mary Lou Rosato, both founding members of the Acting Company, play Papa and leopoldinc, while Patricia Hodges and Anderson Matthews are cast in major supporting roles. "Chapeau" is directed by Gerald Freeman, co- artistic director of The Acting Company, who recently directed "The Robber Bridegroom." Beautiful sets and costumes have been designed by Santo Loquasto, a 1977 Tony Award winner. This will be the second time The Acting Company, now in their seventh year of production, has appeared at WCU. Formerly the City Center Acting Company, it was founded bv John Houseman and Margot Harlev in 1972. It was formed with graduates of the Julliard School Drama Division and continues to seek out young American actors with professional training. It is the only permanent professional repertory company that tours from coast to coast, and under the direction of Mr. Houseman and Gerald Freeman, dedicates itself to "cohesive ensemble presentation of a stylistically varied repertory of classical contemporary plays." In the course of its 77-78 tours, the Company sometimes simultaneously produces Brecht's "Mother Courage and Her Children," William's "Camino Real," Alfred Uhry and Robert Waldman's "Chapeau," and Shakespeare's "King Lear." It also offers master classes, seminars and special productions such as this season's "Duck Variations" by David Mamet, and "The Opposite Sex," by Elinor Jones. The Company has performed 27 plays in 35 states, including engagements in many major cities. The New York Times has called The Acting Company "the finest repertory in New York City." Not only receiving widespread acclaim, their productions have been nominated for two Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Award nominations for "The Robber Bridegroom." an Obie Special Citation for Outstanding Achievement, and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for '' Edward II." "Chapeau" is sponsored by the LCE and the Jackson County Arts Council. The performances are partially funded by N.C. Theater Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The play is free to LCE members, Jackson Art Council members, and students. Adult tickets are $3 and non-Western students are $1.50. v naraciers irom "Chapeau How to get a quiet village in the Smokies jumping. THIS WORLD. Begin with your own college group.
