"Daydreams and Fantasies II", the ceramic artwork \of Norman Schulman, expresses •Vith depth and intensity what ;iannot be stated verbally, fourteen engobe painted pieces made of a specially-formulated 'Jclay body will be on display in ^Western Carolina University's ^Chelsea Gallery at Hinds University •^Center. The exhibit will run from ^October 22 through November 13. Schulman, of Penland, has attended the Parson School of Design, New York University and New York State College of Ceramics. He has held full-time positions in art for more than 25 years, including posts as professor of ceramics and head of the department of ceramics and glass at the Rhode Island School of Design. His work has received national recognition and has received numerous awards and prizes for his artistic endeavors. WCU is the first stop for Schulman's ceramic art work; on November 16, the exhibit will open at Warren Wilson. The "Daydreams and Fantasies II" opened at WCU with a reception on Wednesday, October 22. at 7:00 pm, followed by a gallery talk at 7:30 pm. On Thursday Mr. Schulman presented a Sltde talk from 8:00—9:00 am in Room 278 of Belk Building. A throwing and handbuilding demonstration was conducted from 10:00 am until noon in Room 183 of Belk and a forming and decorative demonstration from 1:30 until 4:00 pm, also in Room 183. Theseeventswereopentothe public and were free of charge. Image plays a significant role in Schulman's works. "Images appear in my mind's eye as color, shapes, patterns and voids; elements of fantasy or metaphor", Schulman says. "They inevitably happen in strange colors and occur in what I see as meaningful relationships. I trust these visions as the expression of those feelings which I am unable to state verbally with depth and intensity. Bringing them to life in and upon clay is what I have come to see as my work." "American Art on Paper // Western Carolina University will be displaying an exhibition, "American Art on Paper," at the Belk Building Art Gallery from November 3 through December 12th. The exhibition of 40 pieces includes works from the 18th century to the present. The earliest is Charles Wilison Peale's "Washington's Portrait," an engraving from 1767 and the recent selections include works by William Bailey, Neil Welliver, Red Grooms, Alfred Leslie and Julian Schnabel. Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, John Marin, Thomas Hart Benton, Edvard Hopper, Isabel Bishop and Willem de Kooning are some of the other artists represented. The show which can be seen as drawing, painting, and printmaking includes such mediums as dry point ink, watercolor, crayon, pencil, pastel, acrylic, engraving, serigraph, charcoal, and lithography. The intent of the exhibition is to show not only the breadth and diversity of American art but to trace the historicaldevelopmentof style, technique and use of the medium. The works were selected from the extensive collectin of the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, one of the first museums established for the exhibition and presentation of exclusively American art. A public reception for the opening of the "American Art on Paper" exhibition will be held in the Belk Building Art Gallery on Monday evening November 3rd at 7:30.
