You must be kidding me. I know it can't be true. You must be kidding me etc etc etc. All along the waterfront A thousand miles away from home sleeping in the rain. I walk up to the Captain just to give him a line of talk. He said "If you've got money, I'll see that you don't walk." Simple Simon met a pie man goixg to toe fair. Said Simple Simon to the Pieman "Let me taste your ware." Said toe Pieman to Simple Simon "Have you any pennies." Said Simple Simon to the pieman "Indeed, I haven't any." In short you might even say don't be stupid. Then again you might not say that As a matter of fact you probably are nti; even paying attention to what you're reading right now. You probably don't even know what you just read. You are like that you know. The first part of this isn't there just to fill up space you dnow. There is , of course another reason and if you don't know what it is mark this place with your finger and go back to the word Start and we'll take it from toe top. If ycu still don't know you had better find out in a hurry, you know. Just walk up to someone, a friend perhaps, and sak, "What is this all about?" And if they 'don't know, well . . . you know about that don't don't you? (You could even ask a stranger). Mull it over. Give it sometime. Ponder. Who is real and who is not What time is now. What place is here. Is this whole thing, this paper,is it a for real thing. Do you as average American University students, with aver- , «3y ica v<vanTt*>ii£. age intelligence take this piece of paper seriously. All these funny words all the little -symbols for people--people in groups—people in funny clothes - doing funny things-smiles- cars-crowds-is this something you can believe? If you were trying to communicate something that to you was truth and beauty would you do it this way? Or some other? Maybe the whole thing is just a giant fraud, When everyone is asleep little men crawl out of those holes in the ground all over the place that have steam coming out of them and laughing their mischievous laughs sit up until dawn like Elfs in the shoemaker's shop and tap and rattle and clank and giggle until they have a paper cobbled. Do you believe what you read? Do you believe what you hear or even what you see? Is the old campus grape vine in working order? Maybe a good kick will loosen some of the moss and untangle some of the kinks; unfreeze a few synapses and get some good old voltage running. if you want to know—ASK. Check out books on the subject Write your Congressman. Consult your minister. Seek guidance. Look under a rock. You might be suprised what you'll find. SIGHTS From page 2 valentine, You are out of sight Queen Victoria would probably shutter in her gowns after reading and looking at our modern Valentines. One thing remains however, toe idea and thought of giving a valentine to a loved one or to someone special will last as long as the birds mate tor spring brings forth flowers. We invite your comments concerning our weekly installments. We think we have some interesting developments this week. So, without any further ado, let the games begin. To Clarify My fellow Americans, in last week's installment, we had a little something to say about "that foreign language department" Allow me to clarify our statement of last week. We were referring to toe policies of that particular department as well as some of the other departments. We see many people on campus who are disgusted by having to take as many as six courses. We did not mean to in anyway insult the professional integrity of those members of that department We feel they are well qualified, and we are proud to add them to our distinguished faculty. But, let's face it, there are a great number of people who would rest a little easier if they had this requirement behind them, rather than between them and graduation. This is our stand on the matter. Today's Message Now, let us get down to toe heart and substance of this week's message. Fellow A- mericans, hear me out! As citizens of these United States, we hold many things dear to our hearts in toe safeguarding of our sacred rights. Many of these basic rights can be found in our Constitution, our Declaration of Independence, and our Bill of Rights, We have been guaranteed under our re-, publican form of government of "life, liberty, and the pursuit 6f happiness." We hold these basic rights to be the guiding aims of our government On toe college level, we must be assured of these same rights. We do not sign away all or any of our rights when we sign an application to college. Students have rights, too. Here at Western Carolina, the student government saw the need to reinforce these basic student rights in written form through toe "Student Bill of Rights," passed two years ago under the leadership of the late Scott Thompson. This was a landmark in the history of student government on this campus. This Bill of Rights was approved by the Student Senate and passed by the Administration. But, is it enforced? Since the time of the passage of this all-important legislation, there have been repeated instances of where administrative officers have entered people's apartments, usually without permission, and policemen searching student cars. Often these cars are parked on campus for only a minute, and others are searched while in the dorm parking lots. We do not question why toe administration is searching the apartments and cars, but their method is in clear violation of Article V, Section B of toe WCU Student BUI of Rights. This article states: Investigation of Student Conduct 1. Except under emergency circumstances, premises occupied by students and the personal possessions of students should not be searched unless appropriate authorization has been obtained. For premises such as dormitories controlled by the institution, an appropriate and responsible authority should be designated to whom application should be made before search is conducted. The application should specify the reason for toe search and the objects or information sought The student should be present, if at all possible, and also toe official calling for toe search be present in toe room at all time of the search. 2. Students detected or arrested in toe course of serious violation of institutional regulations, or infractions of ordinary law should be informed of their rights. No form of harassment should be used by institutional representatives to coerce admission of guilt or information about conduct of other suspected persons. Furthermore, toe Preamble to this important document for the benefit of the student states: Free inquiry and free expression are essential attributes of the community of scholars. As members of that community, students should be encouraged to develop the capacity for critical judgment and to engage in a sustained and independent search for truth. The freedom to learn depends upon appropriate opportunities and conditions in the classroom, on the campus, and in toe larger community. The responsibility to secure and to respect general conditions conducive to toe freedom to learn is shared by all members of the academic community. Students should endeavor to exercise their freedom with maturity and responsibility. Know Rights students, read this Bill of Rights! ft is your rights that are in question! We condone the actions of these men representing toe school. Wehave student regulations by which we are required to follow to the letter. This must also be applied to toe Administration. Students, it is our rights that have been jeopardized! These rules are in your Handbook. We suggest students and administration to read these important rules. We have been granted these rights, but to date they are as worthless as toe paper on which they appearl It is a shame that WCU can make such wonderful progress in so many areas, but fall so short in its relationships to toe student body. Work Together We suggest to toe administration that tactics such as this tend to polarize this campus. Students and Administtation should work together for common goals. After all, WCU is what we all have in common. We hope that tactics such as these are abandoned once and for all. Or, everything we try to do for the betterment of this school will all be in vain. If not, we will see everything crumble beneath us. Friends, there is far too much to be gained, too much to be done, to come to a complete standstill. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University’s student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
