  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN EDITORIALS November 29,2000 The Least Communicative Town in America Full Disclosure is not the hallmark of the current administration. The stunning lack of communication has never been more evident than right now. As we stare down the very real idea of a Biotechnology center that would serve A-B Tech, UNC- Asheville, and WCU, we become fully aware of just how poor the connections are between the faculty and the White Building hierarchy. It would make sense that the Biology Department would be aware that a Biotech center was in the works. The center could be a major step in this University's attempts to make the leap into the next echelon of higher education. The breadth of what we could offer as an institution would increase greatly. We could finally begin to retain, or maybe even pull some students from the RTP ' region. So Dr. Bardo, can you explain to us why no one in the Biology Department knew about the proposed center until it was announced at the PPI conference on November 8? This should not be completely surprising. Two years ago when WCU sponsored the . decision that would involve an entire department without their collective involvement? Couldn't they help you while the project was in the planning stages? You could always reject their opinions if you didn't like their suggestions. Chancellor, to use them. There are people over there who would like to help you. If you look under "B" in the Campus Directory, you will find a listing for the Biology Department. If you dial the number—extension 7244—a pleasant young woman will answer the phone; ask symposium on the Human g maki ^ decisions VOU have her to connect you to the head Genome Project with Dr. Craig Ventor, a man on the forefront of the genomic revolution and a probable Nobel prize winner, the biology department was represented by only one faculty member on the committee to advise the chancellor. Considering the Human Genome Project is one of the greatest scientific undertakings in history, it would have made sense to have more than one faculty member representing the biology department. How can you make a major made without the input of those for whom you are speaking, you are engendering animosity and setting a very bad example. The lines of communication between the White Building and the Natural Science Building are tenuous at best. Perhaps the Physical Plant needs to make sure the phone lines are operational between the two complexes. Should they be found to be working, it would be good of you, of the department. When you finish speaking with him, try any other department you like. I'm sure they all would be ' surprised and pleased to hear from you. Dr. Bardo, you seem to have forgotten a very real aspect of your job: you serve the faculty. It's not the other way around. They in turn serve the students. If you involve the faculty in your decision-making processes, then you will cultivate good working relationships, which will lead to happier, better students. The "Bar" will rise. You may have helped make Cullowhee the "most connected small town in America", but beyond those Ethernet sockets, we don't communicate well with one another. Is it contrary to your leadership style to involve and inform? By making the decisions you have made without the input of those for whom you are speaking, you are engendering animosity and setting a very bad example. Come down from your tower and talk to us. There are people down here who do have some good ideas. Just one more thing: Why were the funds for the Biotech center not included in the school bond.' Is it just a coincidence that wc found out about your latest secret just 12 hours after the bond passed?
