  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN March6.1980 Page 13 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS 3 more outstanding HS players sign with WCU Waters gets his quarterback Bob Waters, Western Carolina University's head football coach has announced the signing of three more prep standouts to grants-in-aid. The latest signees, which pushes WCU's total for the current football recruiting campaign to 21. are quarterback Brian Havner, linebacker Clarence Lyon and defensive back Mclvin Buford. "These three are outstanding athletes that we have been involved with for some time and were all heavily recruited by several other schools," said Waters. Havner could be, according to Waters, "the quarterback we have been looking for." The 6-1, 188 pounder guided Miramar High to the Florida 4-A state- playoff quarterfinals and No. 10 ranking in the stale. Havner, who was recruited by WC U assislant coach Don Dalton, was switched from tight end to quarterback for his team's last seven games and responded with 1,070 yards, 11 touchdowns passes and had only four passes intercepted. "Brian is a heady player who has an outstanding arm, tremendous leadership qualities and an uncanny ability to find his receivers," said Dalton. "The only thing he lacks is experience at quarterback because he has everything else we are looking for in a quarterback to run our passing game," he added. Lyon was one of North Carolina's top high school linebackers in 1978 at Northern Durham High. He was heavily recruited by several major schools, including WCU, but opted for a year of prep school at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy. He captained the North squad in the North-South game played in Raleigh in the 1978 game and was awarded that game's hustle award. The 6-3, 225 pounder was recruited and signed by Dalton. "Clarence will give us immediate help at linebacker," said Dalton. "He is the most mobile prospect in his size class that we have signed in several years," Buford was an all-star running back and linebacker at Lakeshore High in College Park, Ga. He is a cousin of Gerald Harp, Western's All-Southern Conference wide receiver, and possesses the same type of athletic ability. The 5-11, 174 pounder was regarded as one of Georgia's top college prospects following his junior season, but turned in a sub-par senior year. He was recruited and signed by WCU assistant coach Bobby Pate. "Melvin has everything we need in a defensive back," said Pate. "He has super speed and is a very intelligent young man." Buford, also an outstanding track and field performer, was a member of Georgia's state championship mile relay and 440 relay teams. He has turned in times of :09.8 in the 100 yard dash, 0:22.8 in the 220 and :48:5 in the 440. Tennis loses Coach Joe Meigs' team opened their spring schedule with a 9-0 loss at Clemson Wednesday and they don't play again until the March 16 home match against Ohio University. The Cats will play a 21-match regular season before the Southern Conference Championships at Lexington, VA., April 23-26. After finishing the 1979 spring schedule 9-3 and fifth overall in the State. Coach Patti Wilson's team faces a very tough eleven match schedule for 1980. Highlights should be trips to East Carolina (March 21), and Mars Hill (April 14), with the best home matches coming against UNC-Charlotte (March 27). UNC-Asheville (April 1), and the State AIAW Division II Championship Tournament in Cullowhee, April 17-19. McDaniel Bat Cats drop first game Western Carolina's baseball team finished the week a double loser, once to Clemson University and then to the winter weather, as they got the 1980 season off to a slow start. Yet everything was not negative to Coach Bill Haywood. Thursday the Cats travelled to Clemson University, and despite losing 10-2, gave Coach Haywood a good showing. "I was pleased with our defense. We proved we have the speed and defense to win some games. Billy Boyd (2-for-4) and Mel Kinsey also showed me we have some threats at the plate, and our young pitching, particularly Ken Hare and Doug Mitchell did a good job," Western's veteran coach said.
