  • >) ' I H H I tl 111 #« WESTERN -^» 6 CaroliniaN FEATURES September 15,1999 City Lights Bookstore & Cafe Merits Four Forks by Todd Higginson Staff Writer When I am unable to give suggestions that can improve a restaurant, that can only mean one thing — The Food Critic Seal of Perfection. I am pleased to proclaim City Lights Bookstore and Cafe in Sylva worthy of this prestigious accomplishment and present them with the illustrious Food Critic Award. As I walked down from the bookstore section of City Lights into the cafe vicinity, I was immediately pleased. Wafting fragrances of tempting Java beckoned my senses, but I soon discovered that this place is much more than just a coffeehouse. The decor is an impressive mix of casual contemporary andalatel950's 'beatnik' relaxed atmosphere. The wooden floors, as well as the rest of the establishment, sparkle well beyond my immaculate standards. Comfortable outdoor seating is also available for unwinding after a stressful day. If I were to start a bistro, City Lights would be my inspiration. David, my cordial waiter, was quick to bring me a menu and to take my beverage order. Specialty beers and wines are available, along with a variety of inventive nonalcoholic drinks. Meat and vegetarian specials are offered daily. Of course I instantly ordered coffee ($ l .00 including free refill). A turntable is located on a counter filled with a terrific selection of wondrous blends of coffee. I was impressed that they included three decaffeinated blends. I pondered over my important meal decision while sipping on my Vanilla-Nut decaf. Most dinner entrees range from $6.00 to $8.00, which is dirt-cheap for the extraordinary quality that The Critic's Final Assessment The Good: Good is an understatement. The Bad: I am having a recurring nightmare in which I'm trying to teach Dan Quayle how to spell and pronounce Spankopita. The Ugly: I caught a friend reading a children's book titled Captain Underpants. He will never live it down. City Lights Bookstore & Cafe 3 E. Jackson St Sylva, NC 28779 (828) 586-9499 you receive. The cuisine is a fusion of Mediterranean, American, and Vegetarian. I can safely promise that you cannot make a bad choice. As for my order, I decided on the Spankopita, along with an order of nachos as an appetizer. After a short and amusing conversation among dear friends, the nachos arrived. Hot oven-toasted tortilla chips topped majestically made my mouth water. The light and fresh salsa consisted of diced tomatoes, green and yellow bell peppers, and melted cheese. The result made for a fabulous hors d'oeuvre. In a timely manner, the magnificently fresh dinner salads came to pass. A delightful array of red cabbage, cucumber slices, diced tomatoes, and alfalfa sprouts lay upon a bed of romaine lettuce and mixed spring greens. City Lights is very innovative with their homemade dressings. I chose 'Urban Poppy' and was completely satisfied. The Urban Poppy dressing was a minty green color, bursting with subtle flavors that complement a fresh salad. With clockwork timing, the main entree arrived. My guests were greatly satisfied with their festive dinners, and I was ecstatic. My Spankopita was absolutely delectable. Spinach, cheese, and mild spices crammed into flaky Greek pastry layers. Fresh, homemade wheat bread accompanied, and everything was garnished nicely. By this point, I was in food critic paradise. About halfway into the main course, a corner was staged for live musical entertainment. WCU student Christy Brewer crooned and strummed her acoustic guitar for the diverse group of patrons. Pleasant tunes made for a pleasant soul. I was stuffed, but I just had to order dessert. Homemade Mocha Truffle Cake made for a sweet and elated end to the night. It was extremely rich and lush, yet I somehow managed to finish it off. All of City Lights' desserts are fresh homemade, and there is always an elaborate variety of cheesecakes. Cruise on over to City Lights Bookstore and Cafe at 3 E. Jackson Street (downtown Sylva), and you will have a night to remember. ■aaaXaSR etemUtmst Settvket AtmMftkertt Pffrfowss w AH*lMWfkNfl m Cito to/rtf ftmy Prtee* Meottky Options* OvcraiL l'i.. lili tin 111 111! Student Service Personnel Take 'A Break at the Lake' $30 $35- $15 by Johnnie Mickel Staff Writer Each year at Western Carolina University, the Office of Rural Education and the Jackson County School system sponsor "A Break at the Lake." The annual one-day conference is for student services personnel such as nurses, school resource officers, social workers, and other school personnel who wish to become more educated in such areas as identifying "high risk students" and helping to meet their needs. This year, the event will take place on Thursday, October 7, at the Harrell Center at Lake Junaluska. The conference lasts from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and will feature many area speakers who will discuss student needs and how to improve responsiveness to them. Student Service Personnel will attend short conferences or sessions with topics that relate to school issues such as reach- 41 1 pre-registration on-site registration students For more information, call Nancy Wheatley at (828) 227-3307 ing out and helping students to overcome problems before they become out of hand. The conference is directed mainly at those who are already in the educational field, but undergraduates and graduate students are welcome to attend. If this conference is for people already in the educational field, then why is this conference such a big deal? Well, for one, those in the educational field will get the chance to learn how to better serve you and your fellow classmates. Secondly, according to Mary Deck of the College of Education and Allied Professions, "Graduate students get to meet professionals and discuss their issues. All of the presenters are from the region, [it is a] great way to make contacts." If you are interested, National Board for Certified Counselors continuing education credit is available through Western Carolina University.
