  • PAGE 2/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/APRIL6, 1978 Carolinian Newsbriefs Events happening around Cullowhee and WCU S. IL N. to meet Venezuela and the United Kingdom will be the Countries represented by six WCU students in the Student United Nations meeting to be held at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro April 6-k. The WCU students will join students from 15 colleges and universities throughout North Carolina in simulating the actions of tin- Security Council of the United Nations. Participants will debate issues according to U.N. Security Council procedures and represent positions taken by member states. As dignitaries from their nations, they will exhibit the decorum and dress of U.N. ambassadors attempting to discover solutions to world problems. The WCU Venezuelan delegation is represented by Theresa Stepp, head spokesman, and Ted Galatis. Ralph Hamlett is head spokesman for the WCU United Kingdom delegation, which is also represented by Mark Wilkins. Bill Jarrett and Lorraine Hamlett. Dr. Charles Stevens, WCU associate professor of political science, is sen iii)4 as faculty coordinator for the project. The Student United Nations is being sponsored by the North Carolina Political Science Association. Elderhostel offered A new educational program for senior citizens called Elderhostel will be offered by WCU and nine other N.C. universities this summer. Elderhostel is a series of non-credit, college level courses and a variety of extracurricular activities for persons over 60. Courses offered under Elderhostel include "Tracing Your Roots—Genealogy for Beginners," "Happiness: The Grand Pursuit," "Appalachian Music and Dance" and "The American Indian: Fact and Fiction." In addition to courses, activities such as mountain dancing, sight-seeing, golf, tennis and swimming will be available to all participants. Elderhostel will be offered at WCU the weeks of June 25, July 9 and July 16. The cost for one week, which includes tuition, housing and meals, is $75 for N.C. residents and $105 for out-of-state residents. A slide-tape presentation is available to local groups interested in learning more about Eldefnostel. In terested persons should contact Dr. Hal Salisbury, WCU director of continuing education, at 293-7397. Scholarship offered The Cullowhee Branch of the American Association of University Women announces that applications are now being accepted for the A.A.U.W. Scholarship Award for Outstanding Achievement. Applicants must be students who have junior standing and at least a B average by the end of fall semester 1977. In addition applicants will be expected to show evidence of leadership ability in contributions to university and community. The award will include a minimum stipend of $100. Counselors: Keystone Camp, Brevard, NC, April 11, 1978 - Interviewing between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Billy McGimsey of Morganton, a senior biology and psychology major at WCU, recently attended an institute at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. McGimsey, who competed with students from universities in the United States and Canada, was one of 23 persons selected to attend the four-week institute in developmental biology. The course of study pursued by McGimsey consisted of lectures and research on the composition and the development of the eggs and sperm of the sea urchin. He focused on the problem of how the genetic message in the fertilized egg guides its development into a mature organism. The Marine Biological Laboratory is a prestigious institution, having had 29 Nobel Prize winners associated with it since its founding in 1888. Sondak to speak The head of the department of computer science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute will present three lectures at WCU under the WCU Visiting Scholars Program. Dr. Norman E. Sondak will speak at 4 p.m. April 10 on "Introduction to Compiler Design" in room 309 of Stillwell Science Building. At 9:30 a.m. April 11 he will discuss "The Mathematics of Computer Security" in room 220 of Forsyth Building, and at 11 a.m. in Stillwell 309 he will lecture on "The Relationship of Formal Languages to Compiler Design and Development." Dr. Sondak has been active in computer science and computer education for more than 15 years. He is the co-author of two books and author of more than 40 articles and papers on computer science. In addition to his position at Worcester, he serves as affiliate professor of mathematics at Clark University and research professor at The University of Massachusetts School of Medicine in Worcester. Dr. Sondak received his doctorate in engineering from Yale University. His lectures will be free to the public. Student Art Show The annual WCU Student Art Show will open with a reception at 7 p.m. April 10 in the art gallery of the Belk Building. Students whose work is in the show will be competing for $600 in cash awards and purchase awards to be presented by the Twentieth Century Club in Sylva, the WCU Art Students League, and the University Center. Juror for this year's show will be distinguished New York artist Fritz Bultman, who will be at WCU as artist in residence the week before the show opens. Admission to the reception and the show is free to the public. The show will remain on display through April 28. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. until noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2-4 p.m. on Sundays. The show is co-sponsored by the WCU Art Students League and the department of art. 'Grapevine' to open Sverre (Sandy) Sandborg, who has served in the circulation department of Hunter Library for the past year and a half, will be undertaking a new venture which should keep Jackson County in good "spirits." Mr. Sandborg will be starting a wine and party shop called the "Grapevine" in East Sylva Shopping Center with an expected opening date of April 15. He hopes to carry a wide selection of imported and domestic wines, mixes, cheeses, and other party food. Mr. Sandborg, a native Norwegian who graduated magna cum laude in French from WCU in 1976, is not without experience: in 1970-71 he managed a wine retail store in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts on Martha's Vineyard island. His gain will be our loss, but we wish him well in his new "metier." The WCU Catamount football team will culminate their spring practice next Thursday with the annual intrasquad football scrimmage.
