Sorry folks it's only a 4- pager but we may be paying for this one out of our own pockets, and thus we must hold down production costs. All the election news and views, p. 1 and 2. Attend The Forum Thursday, March 28,1968 CULLOWHEE,N.C. SUTTON, ROBERTS VIE FOR PRESIDENCY For President Tom Roberts Tom Roberts, candidate for President of the Student Body, was given a list of nine questions (prepared by The Western Carolinian) to answer in any way that he chose. Below are his answers. 1. What do you feel you have done on this campus to qualify for the office of President of the Student Body? I have served as president of the sophomore class, treasurer of Men's House Government, dormitory counselor for two years, vice-president of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, and president of the Interfraternity Council. Through these positions and working with the May Day, Spring Festival, and Homecoming Committees, I have learned the various channels to be followed concerning the Faculty, administration, and community leaders, 2. How would you describe the role of Student Body President in relation to the Administration? The Student Body President should serve as the major link between the entire student body and the administration. He should do everything within his power to see that the reasonable and justifiable needs, improvements, wants, and desires of the students are met. 3. Do you feel that you adequately know the leading administration, faculty and community leaders that you will come in contact with? Why? Yes. Through the positions listed in the answer to question no. 1, I have had many dealings with the faculty, administration, and community leaders over numerous issues which have arisen. CONTINUED Page 2 . Bob Thomas, Jim Copeland File for V-P Bob Thomas, a sophomore from Bryson City, and Jim Copeland, also a sophomore from West Columbia, S. C, have filed as candidates for Vice-President of the Student Body, Max Hopper, a junior from Shelby, also filed, but withdrew his name Wednesday. For President The Western Carolinian forum will be held Monday, April 1 in the University Center Blue room. All students are urged to attend this forum! The purpose of the forum is to give students the opportunity to meet the candidates for President and Vice-President and to ask questions of them. A Forum committee composed of Dean Hines, Wayne Baldwin and Forrest Bryson will question the candidates— Charles Sutton and Tom Roberts for Student Body President and Bob Thomas and Jim Copeland for Vice President Then students in the audience may question the candidates. The campus radio station WWOO will broadcast the Forum. AW90% JHSWS71 Q. On Wednesday night 1 requested permission to sit in on the Moore Dormitory Dorm Board meeting and was denied entrance. I wonder if anyone can tell me why these "trials" are not an open thing? It is my opinion that a closed hearing or trial can't be as fair to students as an open one. A. According to Forrest F. Ball, Moore Dorm President: "The Dorm Board of Moore Dormitory, in the absence of a provision in the Consitution concerning the admission of apect- ators, has assumed that only authorized persons are to attend the meeting. This assumption was made partly because the students have a voice. in their hall representative, and partly because we felt we needed to get our feet on the ground as a working organization in the beginning. Constitutional provision for the admission of observers must be made through Men's House Government. A recommendation for the same, may, I assume, be made by any interested party or group. Q. In planning the move to the new University Center, what steps were taken by the bookstore manager to find out whether or not they were satisfactorily meeting the needs of the students and faculty? A. Before the move, members of the different faculty departments were questioned concerning which books it would be advisable to order, according to H. J, McCarroll, manager of the University Center Book Store. The number of books should double within he next twelve months, according to McCarroll. Forum Scheduled Monday THOMAS Thomas was presidental assistant his freshman year as well as vice-president of the freshman class. He is presently Buchanan dormitory Senator and vice-president of the Sophomore class. He is chairman of the constitutional review committee, library committee, and the Marshal Club. COPELAND Copeland, a sophomore senator, is chairman of the grounds and buildings committee, member of the student Bill of Rights Committee, and cafeteria committee. He is dormitory assistant at Reynolds. Campaign Speeches Set Presidential andVlce-Presidential campaign speeches will be given at 7:30 tonight in the Grand Ballroom of the University Center. Charles Sutton ■H a mM Charles Sutton, candidate for President of the Student Body, was given a list of nine questions (prepared by The Western Carolinian ) to answer in any way that he chose. Member of Day Student Council - two years, day student Senator I helped start the Day Student Council, helped begin the Day Student Housing list and meal ticket, I served on the Ways and Mean's Committee, As Vice-President I served on the Student Affairs and Student Activities Committees, Health and Safety Committee, Program's Committee, and Chairman of Standard's Committee. I have worked with all Senate Committees, 2. How would you describe the role of Student Body President in relation to the Administration? I feel that the Student Body President should be the laison between the students and the administration. The Student Body President should serve the students by being their spokesman. This would mean that he would have to keep in close touch with the students and students leaders in order to represent the students well, 3. Do you feel that you adequately know the leading administration, CONTINUED Page 2 ....,,,.. . Howard K. Smith To Speak April 3 Howard K, Smith, internationally famed television commentator, author and war correspondent will speak here Wednesday, April 3 at 8 p,m. under the auspices of the International Relations Club of Western Carolina University, His subject will be "The Changing Challenges Facing America." Smith has probably received more journalistic awards than any other American newsman now speaking and writing regularly on national and world affairs. - Since joining ABC News in 1961, Smith became the only working newsman ever to win the Paul White Award, the only commentator to win the Du Pont Award for the second time and was nominated for an Emmy for "Howard K, Smith: News and Comment," his ABC-TV Program that ran for 17 months. For more than a year, Smith was the anchorman for ABC's program, "SCOPE," a regular weekly review of the Vietnam war. During the summer of 1966i Mr. Smith went to Vietnam to be presented in an interview with his own wounded soldier son, entitled, "A Father, A Son and A War," The broadcast was widely acclaimed. While he was in that strife-torn land, he made other film reports and wrote of his observations there. Throughout the fall of 1966, Smith served as anchorman on ABC's coverage of the gubernatorial and Congressional elections. Smith is currently seen and heard regularly over ABC-TV but is limiting this television appearance until the opening of the spring primaries in order to complete a book on American politics. His other books include: "Last Train from Berlin," "The State of Europe," and a new book, "Washington, D.C,," published by Random House in 1967. During most of his years with CBS, Smith served as chief European correspondent (over 11 years) and returned to the U.S. to take over assignments as moderator, commentator or reporter on most of the major CBS News efforts, including "CBS Reports," "Face the Nation," "Eyewitness to History" and "The Great Challenge"- and narrated numerous news specials. In 1957, he became CBS News Washington correspondent and in March, 1961, was appointed chief correspondent and manager for the Washington Bureau. Smith's appearance at WCU will be in the ballroom of the A, K. Hinds University Center.
