  • Page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, April H( 1968 CAROLINIAN OUTLOOK By Jay Gertz Student Non-Action Comnittee A new organization has been devised that should appeal to all Western Carolina students. The organization is SNAC, which stands for Student Non- Action Committee. This group is against nothing. This group is for nothing. This group's object is nothing, absolutely nothing. This group is good for nothing. The members do nothing that creates exercise or involves action. There are certain bodily functions necessary for survival that are accepted by SNAC. They are: drinking, smoking, relations with the opposite sex, eating, and other body processes. Sleeping is greatly admired and is a holy sacrament to the ideals of the group. Sleep is as non-active as one can get, therefore the longer a member sleeps , the higher a standing in the hieracrchy one gets. During the waking hours, a member's day is devoted to gaining a level as close to that of sleep as he or she can reach. The ultimate objective (a type of nirvana) is the goal of absolute apathy. Ninety-five per cent of the WCU population has already gained this state. They are honorary members because official enrollment would be too activist SNAC has many fun activities. One is watching Sominex commercials on television. Another is viewing the TV test pattern upon waking in the morning, or, if you are a loyal SNAC member, viewing it upon waking at night More organizational activities are: listening to recordings of the snores of various animals, thinking about installing work-saving appliances ( for actually installing these devices would be activist), reading books on forms of relaxation and conducting protest non- marches. Marches would take too much energy, so the group applies for permits not to march and threatens the city hall by not marching, unless their demands are met SNAC had no constitution or by-laws because the formation of these documents would be too active. There are randon unwritten thoughts that are applied when a situation deems it necessary. SNAC has produced many famed personalities. Among them are Yeta Karachinsky, the world reknown mattress tester; and Guru Rama Krishna famed telepath, who overcame the energy involved in talking. Dating can become a frustrating experience when a member has to call his date and tell her, "Zelda, remember that date we do not have at 8:30, Wednesday night? Cancel it I can't make it" SNAC's emblem is a turtle eating Miltown. Their motto is. Where the action isn't , The institution of the year is the WCU administration. A meeting to initiate new members will be held thisThur sday at 7 p.m., in the University Center Grand Ballroom. Students wishing to join are heartily urged not to attend. C. Students Comment On Feedback Letter In "Question Of Week'1 Freeman Jones' letter in Feedback in the last issue of the Western Carolinian aroused a lot of controversy around campus. In a recent survey concerning what students at Western think of their student government, this is wliat some of them had to say: Jo-An Baggett: Th« senators do more work than a lot of the students realize because most of the work is done behind the scene. I have learned from being a senator that it involves a lot of time an personal effort. ernment comes only at election time. Ed Johnson: I think the idea of student government is a good one but the fact remains that unless a student government is given freedom from the administration it really doesn't do any good. And, I'm afraid that's the situation that we have here at Western. I agree with Freeman Jones. BAGGETT Beverly Willis: The student government as a whole is very good, but there should be more contact between Men's House Government and Men students and Women's House Government and Women students. Students should be informed of what's going on and what the student government is doing to improve the student government Lyn Nichols: It's a farce, but other than that. . . JOHNSON James (Tiny) Rollins: Student government on campus is for the students. However, the student body doesn't take advantage of it. They don't vote, but they expect everybody to know what they're thinking without actually telling the student leaders what they want When you have only 800 people vote for senators it shows that people aren't interested in student government. Elaine Mason: I fep, ,, our student government7, , •at the best job Possible,1^ feel it is unjustly critic?^ Cheryl Smith: Student gov ej™"ert » a &rce, not because of the students who run it but because the administraH won't let it do a **** th*°n Don Walker: I agree $1 Freeman Jones on some point, but I also disagree with h- ' because i think stodenfl*11* ernment has done a lot here. Susan Jenkins: I feel there is a lack of communication bet ween the senators and their fellow students; however, the blame cannot be placed on either one alone. Danny Morton: I agree with Freeman Jones' article in Feedback, but it doesn't have to be that way. Sara Jo they should interest in gram, such vice to the schools do I don't see too. Thomas: I think try to promote more our athletic proas having bus ser- ball games. Other things like this and why Western can't MORTON Other students said they did not feel they knew enough about student government to make any statement ROLLINS A college graduate will earn from $140,000 to $200,000 more than a high-school grad by age 60, the February Reader's Digest notes. Donna Arrowood: student government is a good thing, and although there is still room for improvement, I think it has improved a lot over the last few years at Western.
