  • xxLlm nuoxiJiv^ c-rtxvvJi-ilNlAN Page 7 Cats Lose To Guilford By GARY TYLER Western Carolina dropped a doubleheader, 2=0, 5=3, to powerful Guilford Tuesday on the Qaaker diamond, The Catamounts just couldn't seem to hit the sparkling Guilford pitching in either game, collecting only three hits in the first game and five in the second disaster. Western now stands at 6 4 overall and 5-3 in Carolinas Conference play, Although Cat pitcher Roger Miller, 3-1, allowed only two hits in the first game, he suf= fered his first loss of the sea™ son. Both Quaker runs were scored in the first inning on a double by winning pitcher Bryan, and a Miller wild-pitch. Hicks, Morgan, and Downs got the only Western hits, each tapping a single. Guilford pitcher Stewart, 5-0, was not to see his unmarred record spoiled in the second game either, as he allowed WCU only three runs on five hits, Jim Bullins, 1-1, who allowed eight hits, was the losing pitcher. All three of Western's runs came across in the third inning as Red Thompson received a base=on-balls and was driven in by a screaming triple by Eddie Hope, Big Ronnie Wall then stepped in and cleared the bases with a long home run. Western's offense was led statistically by Leonard Mor- gan who went two for three, and Wofford who went one for two, plus a walk. The Cats journey to Catawba this week-end for a Carolinas Conference game Saturday af= ternoon. Western also plays there Monday. Softball Action Intramural Softball action continued last week as Third Reynolds North downed Third and Fourth Madison in a hard= fought 11-10 game. Fraser and Jerry Estes led the winning team with three hits each. Garnett Teague led the Madison team with two hits and a homerun. The next game saw a much improved Third Reynolds South crush Third Buchanan, 18-3, John Powell led the Reynolds nine in scoring, slamming two Babe Ruth style home runs. Also hitting homers were Al Haller, Larry Mucci, Ronnie Sherrill, and Joe Miller, Two of Buchanan's runs came off of homers by Bob Burkw off of homers by Bob Burke and Dean Robinson. Back to the Fraternity League, Pi Kappa Alpha out played Pi Kappa Phi to end their game 8-2. Pike was led by Larry Morgan and Mike Shina, This was the second encounter for these teams. Pi Kappa Phi had been leading 10-3 in a previous game which was not completed because of rain. In the next game Theta Xi Shut down Alpha Phi Omega 13-6. Tennis Team Loses Openers By Ken Ball The tennis team got off to a bad start this season, dropping two games to Pfeiffer last week and one to Applachian on Monday, Pfeiffer, last year's Conference runner-up, gave the Western team a thorough swatting last Friday afternoon. Our number one man Herb Bolick lost 6-2 and 6-0 to Rick Napp, "Yank" won his match by a forfeit Friday, BILL Oehler WCU's number three player was defeated 6-2 and 6 2. Rick Palmer lost to Moore and Warren White lost 6-4 and 6-2. Western showed improve^ ment in the match next day, but had not come up enough to down Uie powerful Pfeiffer team. Bolick gave Napp a close match but lost with three sets 6 4, 2 6, and 6 0, Christensen lost to Dave Smith 6-0, 6-0, Bill Oehler lost two close sets to Moore 6 3 and 7 5, Palmer and White were also defeated. Logan's Stars Defeat Team 126-117 i Ronnie Wall hits homer Women's Inframurals Tuesday, in Minor League Softball, Third Helder forfeited to Leatherwood. On Wednesday, Second Helder downed Fourth Helder by a score of 24 to 5. In the Major League Game between team 2 and team 4, team 2 started off the first inning by scoring 7 runs and holding team 4 to only one run. They were unable to keep up the pace and began slipping in the third inning allowing team 4 to score 7 runs. The final score was team 4-16 and team 2-10 runs. Rematch Of Logan-Miller The Henry Logan — Larry Miller All-Star teams will face each other in a return match Saturday at 8 o'clock in T. C, Roberson gym at Skyland, The Logan forces will be virtually the same as it was Tuesday with Logan, Bob Redd, and George Stone of Marshall University, Howard Bayne of Tennessee, now with the Kentucky Colonels, Bob Thompson of WCU, Larry Arrick and Tom Lindley of Asheville-Biltmore, and former WCU star, Charlie McConnell. WCU's All-American led his All Stars to a 126-117 victory over the Forcesof UNC's Larry Miller Tuesday night. Logan started slowly, but put on an outstanding performance later in the game. He led both teams in scoring before 2200 fans at the Asheville Biltmore Gym, Henry hit 17 shots from the floor and had five assists to his credit, Tom Bayne, a former Ten nessee star, held Larry Miller to five points the first half, However, Miller put on a pass ing and assisting exhibition and led his team at the end of the game with 27 points. Skip Harlicka followed Miller with 26 points, Harlicka, the All-ACC guard rivaled Logan in scoring in the first half as he picked up 17 to Henry's 19 points. Two key players on Logan's team were Bob Redd and George Stone, both of Marshall University, These two, from the recent National Invitational Tour ■ nament in New York, controlled the backboards in this match. Each one ended the game with 23 points and worked well on the floor maneuvers with Logan, especially on the fast break, Bayne added 18 points to the victor's efforts and Asheville Biltmore's Larry Arnick picked up ten points. Two other stars from South Carolina, Frank Standard and Gary Gregor tallied 20 points each for the Miller squad. Baynes, Stone, and Redd led the way as The Logan Five grabbed an early 18-9 lead, Gregor and Standard cut the lead down to six, 20-14, and finally with ten minutes left in the first half, Gregor tied the score at 29-29.
