  • Page 8 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, October 12,1967 A Mother Views Vietnam By WALTER GRANT Collegiate Press Service North Viet Nam has already won toe war, but American bombing and fighting is being continued as a means of "sheer punishment and revenge," according to a leading peace worker who just returned from Hanoi. "Our military leaders are not dumb. They are bound to realize this," says Mrs, Dagmar Wilson, founder and leading spoksman of Women Strike for Peace, a growing peace movement which now has offices in 36 states. She says that toe continued bombing of the North by toe United States makes toe Vietnamese people "want to fight all toe harder." During her two week visit to North Vietnam, Mrs. Wilson said, "When planes are dropping bombs on your home and killing members of your family you don't feel like doing anything but shooting back," she said. Mrs. Wilson and two other members of Women Strike for Peace went to Hanoi on Invitation from the North Vietnamese Women's Union. They returned to toe United States In time for toe Sixth National Conference of Women Strike for Peace, held here last weekend. The women attending toe conference, which was closed to the press, decided to emphasize two basic programs in the coming months, Mrs. Wilson said. First, toe women pledged their moral and financial support to toe draft resistance movement, CAbout 600 women called for an end to toe draft during a demonstration here before toe conference started.) Mrs. Wilson said toe women plan to protest toe was and toe Selective Service system at local draft boards and Army in duction centers across the groups plan to emgama in civil disobedience. Second, toe women's peace group decided to start a grassroots movement to end toe Vietnam war in 1968 by helping elect a peace candidate to the Presidency. "We are going to mobilize the «Mtaa to mobilize toe people of the country," she said. Mrs. Wilson said three steps must be taken by the United States before toe war can end. "We must stop toe bombing, recognize toe National Liberation Front, and agree to toe ultimate withdrawal of American troops, " she said. These conditions were confirmed by North Vietnamese Premier Phan Van Dong during an interview in Hanoi, Mrs, Wilson said. She said her trip to Hanoi made her realize President Johnson's policies "actually are increasing socialism in Vietnam instead of persuading toe people to give it up." The three women who made toe trip requested an appointment with the President to report on their findings, but were turned down by toe White House. The North Vietnamese are a unified people, according to Mrs. Wilson. She said their morale is "superb and getting better all toe time." Mrs. Wilson said claims by Administration officials that American bombers are striking military targets only "are very hard to validate: when you are on toe scene." She said four residential streets near toe center of Hanoi had been bombed before their arrival. "We also saw a hospital in the center of Hanoi which had been bombed, and on toe outskirts of toe city we saw a hospital that had been bombed repeatedly," she said. LAST DAYS FOR CLASS PICTURES KILLIAN 137 Monday And Tuesday Oct. 16 & 17 8:30 -12:00 1:00 - 5:00 Faculty Pictures Will Also Be Taken At This Time "Many schools have been destroyed by the bombing. Children now must go to school from 5 to 8 a.m., when the bombing usually starts. All school children wear heavy straw hats to protect their heads from bomb fragments, and they carry first aid kits, " Mrs. Wilson said. She told of her visit to toe city of Phat Dlen, where about 50 percent of toe people are Catholic. "Numberoua Catholic churches had been bombed, and one church was hit by a guided missile about 30 minutes after we visited it." Mrs. Wilson said she was told that one Catholic church was bombed in 1966 while 72 people were worshiping toereJdlling all of them. The peace leader emphasized that American citizens are being misled when they are told American soldiers are fighting Communism. "This is not primarily a Communist movement. This is a nationalistic movement, " she said.
