  • mursday, September 25.1969 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Qntest Marks Thirty-Third Meeting of Rivals Cats to Battle Talented Appalachian for 2nd Win Page 15 Fresh from a thrilling 20-17 victory over Carson-Newman last Saturday night in the season opener, Western Carolina's new look travels to Boone Saturday night to face rugged Ap= palachian State at 8 p.m. in Conrad Stadium. The youthful Catamounts have been preparing this week to meet a powerful offense which scored 41 points in blasting Emory & Henry last weekend. The Mountaineers stand 1=1 on the season after dropping their opener to powerful East Tennessee. . . When the Apps and WCU have tangled in the past, it's usually been quite a ball game. The two teams have met previously 33 times. The Mountaineers lead in the series 27 to 5. There has been one tie. Appalachian downed WCU 28-14 last season en route to an 8-2 season. In 1967, the Catamounts upset Appalachian by a convincing 21-0 at Boone. The 1966 ASU- WCU game was the grand donnybrook of them all, as Appalachian scored 35 points in the second quarter and held on for a 35=33. win, despite the efforts of Cat quarterback Jim Williams, who completed 27 of 47 passes for 413 yards. The Cats' starting line-up will remain the same. Fleet Steve Spradling, who set up a Gary Dotson touchdown with a 37-yard pass reception in the third quarter last week, will be the starting split end. Burly Joe Kearse, a 6=3, 220-pounder will open at left tackle.with strapping 250-pound Don Turner at the other tackle. Mike Black, an 185 pounder and stocky 193-pound Tony Ashley will anchor the guard slots. Junior Eddie Blake will start at center. Passing ace Don Dalton, hard running Gary Dotson, deceptive Otis Mcintosh and scrappy Paul Smith will complete the Cata- A Gome of Inches I Football is a game of inches. Crucial inches make or break a football team. The inches paid off for WCU andthe Catamounts Saturday night in a brutal 20-17 victory over Carson-Newman College. It is difficult to analyze key plays in a winning game or a losing effort One must look at the performance of many players. A mental mistake or a physical blunder could mean the game. Saturday night's contest was no exception. The Catamount offense sputtered in the opening half mainly because of wet conditions. But several factors also hampered the WCU efforts. The soggy turf slowed WCU's powerful Gary Dotson, although he ran with authority. Deceptive halfback Otis Mcintosh motored through the line with only minimum trouble. But Western's passing game, although, finishing with an impressive 308 yards, suffered in the initial half. The conditions caused the slow scart of split end Steve Spradling and tailback Paul Smith. The fact that WCU's ends and wide receivers were being whipped at the line of scrimmage was clearly visible. Carson -Newman succeeded in checking the receivers, thus breaking up patterns and making pass pattern coverage much easier. The slow starts threw the passing time off. Passes were over thrown, under thrown, and some never thrown. The game of inches and timing was turning against WCU until the start of the second half. The menacing Carson= Newman ' front line poured through to spill quarterback Don Dalton for three critical losses and cause erratic passing throughout the first half. The Cats' offensive line developed some porus holes that were eventually closed up. Late in the second half the inches began toturn WCU's way. Fleet Spradling streaked under SEE A GAME, Page 18 . .. mount's backfield. Dalton, a three-year starter at quarterback, threw for 308- yards last week Including a 93=yard bomb to Smith. Dalton completed only eight of 21 passes, but he had lengthy completions to Smith, Spradling, Dotson, and tight end John Davles. Mcintosh led all Cat rushers in the game with 57-yards In 19 carries, while Dotson racked up 49-yards in 17 carries and one touchdown. The impressive Catamount defense will also remain in tact, Jim Dougherty and Leslie Herrin will handle the end assignments. Sophomore giant Steve F, Williams and agressive Ron Cobbledick will hold down the tackle slots. Rod Mangum is listed as the starting guard, Standout Mike Bigger staff and big 6-2,190-pound Bill Stockton make up the Unebacklng corps. Freshman Stacy Ray Is also expected to see plenty of line- backing action. The frequently criticized defensive backfield which turned into a vaunted unit last week will stay the same. Sophomore Jim Laughridge and speedy Harvey Walker are slated to start at corner back. BUI Beaty will occupy the mover position with Woody Woodruff ' completing the defensive eleven at free safety.
