  • Thursday, October 12,1967 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Fabulous Flow Of Fluids Conies From Sylva ABC n« nAvrn u/ATcrw U Feedback By DAVTD WATSON Sylva's ABC store opened last week with a fabulous flow of fluids. The first week of business ended Saturday with sales of 8,362 bottles of booze totaling almost $27,000! Dally sales were as follows: Monday - 1,140 bottles, Tuesday - (a slack day) 868 bottles, Wednesday - 1,024 bottles, Thursday - 1,114 bottles, Friday - 1.946 bottles, and Saturday - (the bit Homecoming day) 2,270 bottles. Total sales of individual brands are not available at this time. However, a glimpse at a few of toe sales are as follows: straight 100% corn whiskey - 326 bottles, Old Crow - 121 bottles, Baccardi Light Rum - 120 pints and 33 fifths (the store ran out late in the week), and last but not least toe Vodka shelves were cleaned out Manager Danny Barnes said that there was a line at the door when he opened Saturday morning and business was heavy all day. Barnes continued by saying that there has been no trouble with drunk clientele. He believes that WCU students are the friendliest and best customers. For those of you who are worried about this weekend's liquor - never fear: a big shipment is coming in Friday. Since they have storage room for 15 to 18 hundred cases, they probably wont run out in toe near future. Barnes had only one complaint, "They're working us too darn hard," *********************************** Blended Or Vatted It's Still Whiskey By PHIL SHOOK Editor's note: This is toe first in a series of a connoisseur's views of whiskies and wines. Mr. Shook hopes to inform toe reader of toe finer liquors. Scotch whisky has been distilled for many centuries. At first, Scotch was not toe "master craftsman's art" that it is now. Today, toe production of toe raw materials, toe distillation processes, and toe consumer's market have grown to such a great degree and art that the Scotch producers have not only secured toe market for one of the most famous of toe "spirits," but they control toe world market on Industrial and medical alcohol. Half of all toe Scotch whisky distilled is shipped to toe United States for consumption. With the exception of one thousand cases per year of vatted or single whisky (not blended) A- merican consumers drink what is referred to as blends, i.e., several types of Scotch whisky, each with Its own distinctness. All of these various Scotches are distilled from grains, with some quantity of barley malt used to convert toe grain starch to sugar. There are two main categories of Scotch. One is toe malt whisky, which comes from the Highlands of Scotland; the other is the grain whisky, which is traditionally distilled in toe Lowlands of Scotland. (The former being the VATTED whisky, and toe latter being a blend.) The differentiation between VATTED or SINGLE Scotch and blended Scotch is: VATTED Scotch Is one Scotch whisky distilled from malt which is characteristically "heavy" in taste. It is distilled in the Highlands where clear, soft water is abundant, and where excellent Highland barley , Highland peat (that malts toe barley), and Highland air (that matures toe whisky) is found. Blended Scotch whisky is a blend of grain Scotch and malt Scotch. The fullness of the flavor is dependent upon the amount of malt whisky used in the blend. The distillation of the grain spirits and the blending of these spirits with toe malt whisky takes place in the Lowlands of toe country. The process for both is basically toe same; toe quality of materials used is considered to be of major difference—the Highlands having the better sources from which to draw. In toe last century, after their invention and utilization of toe patent-still, toe distillers of the Lowlands banded together to conquer toe market for Scotch whisky. The Distillers Company- Limited was one of toe first of such bands. The DCL represented such brands as Haig & Haig, White Horse, Black and White, Johnnie Walker, and Dewar's, and came to be known as "The Big Five." DCL's invasion of toe English market "revolutionized English drinking habits within toepast two decades of Victoria's reign." At that same time, the High landers were selling more malt whisky than ever, but were not coming near toe blender's profit margin. It should be pointed out that the English, while drinking toe blends which were light and pleasant to the taste, thought that they were drinking straight Scotch, or 100 percent malt whisky. This half-truth resulted In a law suit In 1905 iniated by toe malt brewers against toe blenders. The case evolved around toe auestion. "What Is Whisky?" "After a four-year battle, a CONTINUED Page 7 ...,,. . From Page 2 Especially my thanks to the gracious professor and toe girls of toe Home Ec, Department who invited us for refreshments before game time. Tknow the boys would have liked vjry much to have met your girls, but it was too close to mealtime and so I was sent as the representative to enjoy your refreshments. I was graciously received and the refreshments were delicious. The old statement with which you are familiar, 'It isn't whether you win or lose but how you play toe ga.no," is true. 1 should like to add this thought as another truth: 'It isn't whether you win or lose but how you treat toe visiting team." To you and your staff I extend every good wish, and to all of you at Wostern Carolina I extend Chrisliin greetings in the name of the M.m who always rolled up His sleeves to help others.
