  • Thursday, October 12,1967 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 3 Advise & Dissent By Nick Taylor While watching one-eye (television) toe other night, I found myself face to face with one William F. Buckley, Jr., for toe second time. Mr. Buckley holds forth on a television show entitled "Firing Line," which, considering his views on Vietnam, is rather appropriate. The show in question featured an interview with Dr. Howard Taylor, toe president of Sarah Lawrence University, and toe subject of toe evening was education in America, particularly as related to certain of toe recent academic freedom movements., Before discussing the interview between Buckley and Dr. Taylor, let me comment on toe last time I was confronted by Mr. Buckley, Some of you may recall a defense of toe Vietnam war (more truthfully, an indictment of toe war doves) by Mr. Buckley that appeared as a guest editorial last year at the request of one of the local professoria. The article had originally appeared in Buckley's right-wing publication, "The National Review," and why such a defense (or indictment) could not have been produced locally for Carolinian publication I have no idea. In any event, I think even less of Buckley's attitudes toward education than of his war views. An appropriate comment might be this - if Buckley served any decision-making function in regard toAmerican education, the system of colleges and universities inthis country would be a morass of Gothic garrets and equally modern programs and methods. In reviewing academic freedom, toe pair placed a great deal of emphasis on toe student revolution in regard to such items as experimental univer sities and toe freedom movements. This, in itself, is good, had Buckley not corrupted toe context by continually trying to place more emphasis on movements that had lost their legitimacy through non-student irresponsibility, as in the Berkeley free speech movement While Dr. Taylor insisted that even the free speech demonstrations had had their beginnings in toe legitimate and responsible aspirations of concerned students, Buckley prostituted his argument, if, indeed, he had one in toe first place, by dragging in snide references to what it had become. Even this short vision and reactionary temperment could be overlooked, as toe more enlightened Dr. Taylor tried time and again to do, were it not for the unadulterated boorishness with which Buckley conducted himself. When Dr. Taylor mentioned toe exposure of serious ideas among toe Berkeley faculty as a result of their, concern with the protests there, Buckley's witty and erudite comment was, "I'd be concerned, too, if I was prevented entering my office by having to step over three big bodies." Very funny, but hardly conducive to an intelligent and mature argument If: nothing else, however, it shows that Mr. Buckley is quite an effective downshouter, down- shouters being characterized by an ability to confuse issues and a decided knack for a logical fallacy known as poisoning the wells. The latter occurs when someone says, "If you don't agree with me, you're a perfect fool," never taking into account toe possibility of their own error. Traits such as these seem to be fairly common among those who follow Mr. Buckley's thinking. . In any event, Buckley seems to subscribe almost totally to the stagnancy that exists today in American higher education, while Dr. Taylor sees refreshment and not a little relief in the wind of change. Perhaps Buckley would do his intelligence a favor if he would inhale a little of this wind, instead of exhaling continually in the face of it The Broken Window By Freeman D. Jones m&k Rules For Olympic Dart- Throwing Found—(a sort of comment on something or other perhaps). 1st DART—Counts as indicated unless it hits in outside ring in which case it is doubled if on green, 1 1/2, to nearest whole number, If on white. 2nd DART—Counts 3/4 as indicated if on green, as indicated if on white. If two greens and the same number are hit in succession, toe total of toe two is subtracted from the total score. If on white, with toe same conditions, 27 is added to score, regardless of Indicated subscore on board, 3rd DART—Counts as indicated. If dart lands on number 3, toe 4th dart is forfeited 4th DART—Counts as bd;- caljd. unless it falls on the Dumber 13, then player losas entire score of toe subset for the 4=shot set However, if 13 has been hit by one of toe 3 previous darts, toe 13 is added to toe subscore and the score is ""(then) doubled, unless it shall put toe player over 301, then it shall be counted as 300. ♦Parentheses mine General Riles 1. For each dart that hits outside toe board, 10 is subtracted from toe score. 2. If toe 4-dart subscore adds (up) to over 69, the sub-score shall be doubled. Or if the 4-dart subscore is under 10, (then) 50 points shall be added. 3. If toe entire 4-dart set lands upon toe same number, the player has toe choice of adding 200 to his score or he may inform his opponents)** that each one owes him a (round). This shall be paid immediately, or, in toe absence of such, payable at such time as is in possession of his opponentXs)*. If toe latter alternative is chosen, no score is aided. This situational possibility also exists if both the red darts fall upon toe colored white area of the board, and if both green darts fall upon toe green area. Feedback Upon reading this letter toe first assumption will be that Pi Kappa Aipha is crying about losing toe homecoming award to Tau Kappa Epsilon. Let me get that out of toe way by saying that nothing could be further from my purpose. I'm sure all Greeks, especially Tau Kappa Epsilon, understand and believe me on that point I feel that the judges did their job well in this area. It is in regard to the sorority award that I am writing this letter. It is my opinion, and that of many others, that toe sorority which won did not have toe best display. Understand me, this is not toe fault of that sorority. They had nothing to do with the judging and must be held entirely blameless on this account Having witnessed firsthand the reaction of several of the sisters of Sigma Kappa when the awards were announced I would say that they were surprised to toe point of actually being shocked. Homecoming has an entirely different meaning to toe Greeks than to the independents on this campus. It is not a weekend but an entire week. A week during which many hours of sleep are lost, grades drop, and thousands of dollars spent building displays, The awards given for building the best displays are highly coveted and to lose unjustly is highly demoralizing—not only for toe individual Greek organizations but for the entire campus. There was much dissention over toe judging last year and this year judges were brought in from off campus. It appears that this system is not adequate and toe judges highly incompetent I might offer a suggestion that next year judges be invited from other surrounding colleges and universities. I believe they would be more qualified and impartial. If some , thing is not done to rectify the present situation it could turn out tot in toe future the Greeks will quit building displays entirely. Let's face it, Ad Building, homecoming would be nothing without the Greek effort. This letter has been written and submitted without the knowledge or consent of my fraternity and any criticism or harsh comments that may result should be aimed d'.rectly at me.
