  • ^Carolinian Catamounts Stealing Their Way to Victory by Don Costello The Catamount baseball squad has found a new weapon this year. . No, it's not the long-ball that they have relied upon for more than a decade. It's not the Wheaties, the Gatorade, or Baseball Bingo. It's SBs. Stolen Bases, that is. When senior Jeff Sziksai swiped his fourth base of the season in the third inning of Sunday's victory over Wofford, he set the new season high for stolen bases by a Catamount squad, 112. It's not a surprise that the Cats broke the record. It is, however, a surprise that they broke it with 15 games and the Southern Conference Tournament remaining on the schedule. Head Coach Rodney Hennon attributes the noticeable increase in stolen bases to the team that is loaded with speedy, aggressive runners and his coaching approach which promotes base stealing. "Anybody in the starting lineup, except for one or two, is capable of stealing a base at any time," said Hennon. The Catamounts have not had that kind of on-base presence in a long time. The threat of the steal has also caught the attention of Catamount adversaries. They don't keep records for pick-off attempts, but Catamount opponents have surely eclipsed whatever the old record would have been. Senior Chuck Koone, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994 and 1996, has already eclipsed the old record for stolen bases with 30 steals in 33 attempts this season. Koone's swipe Saturday against Wofford moved him past Wayne Tolleson's mark of 29 stolen bases in the 1977 and 1978 campaigns. Tolleson went on to play for the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees. Three other Catamounts have double- digit figures in steals. Second on the team is Dave McKay with 21. Martin Barrow is perfect in the steal department with 19 steals in 19 attempts. And Chris Moore is 10-for-ll on the base paths. "It's fun to create things and make things happen," said Hennon of his team's new identity. "Sometimes you live and die by that, but sometimes it pays off." And paid off it has. The two victories over Wofford last weekend moved Western's record to 30-10, their 14th 30-win season in the last 15. The Catamounts are sitting in third place in the Southern Conference with a 14-4 conference record, one-half game behind the Citadel Bulldogs and a game back of UNC- Greensboro. The Bulldogs come rolling into Cullowhee this weekend for a crucial three- game series at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium. The base stealing will begin with the noon~double-header on Saturday with the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. Serves our Schools Sam Neill lias served on the UNC Board of Governors for (he pasl 12 years. Kob uanlorn Treasurer Men s Golf Struggles at SoCon Championship by Don Costello The Western Carolina men's golf team wrapped up a disappointing spring season with a tenth-place finish out of eleven teams at the Southern Conference Championships in Spartanburg, S.C. Western had a three-round team score of 964, shooting 319 in round one, 315 in the second round, and 330 in the third round on Tuesday. The Catamounts highest individual finish was turned in by Jason Thomas. The junior from Lexington shot 80-76-79 for a 235,19 shots over par for a tie for 36th place. Jason Sugg was the second highest Catamount with a 45th place finish with a three-round score of 240. Mike Bowers shot 246, a shot ahead of teammate Marc Leichtman in 49th place. Brad Hawkins struggled to break 80 in the three rounds, which resulted in a 54th place finish. East Tennessee State edged the Wofford Terriers by one stroke to take the 1998 Southern Conference Championship. Furman finished in third place followed by Chattanooga and Davidson in fourth, and UNC- Greensboro in sixth. Georgia Southern took the seventh spot ahead of eighth-place Appalachian State, the Citadel in ninth, Western Carolina tenth, and VMI finished last. Rion Moore of Wofford was the medalist with the three-round low score of 70-68-74 for 212, four shots under par. Track, Tennis, Golf Prepare for SoCon Championships by Daniel Hooker With the spring semester starting to wind down, the athletic teams here at Western Carolina are gearing up for the Southern Conference Championships. For the Catamount Track & Field and Women's tennis and golf teams, this upcoming weekend is the Southern Conference Championship weekend. Track & Field For head coach Danny Williamson's track and field teams, the indoor season ended with disappointment. Their bid to win the Southern Conference Indoor title was not reached. Keeping that in mind, Williamson hopes that it will serve as motivation for his team and to work to their advantage going into the Outdoor Championships this weekend at VMI in Lexington, VA. Coming off a cold and snowy Good Friday in Boone, Coach Williamson commented, "I feel like we have a good chance to win the Southern Conference Championship." This season, WCU track on the men's side has been pretty successful. Sophomores Johnie Morrison and Rayshon Carthen have performed well in running events such as the 100 meters. Morrison finished third and sixth at the Emory meet in Georgia and Clemson respectively. Teammate Rahsaan Uldaneta has also run well in the 100 meters and the 110-meter hurdles. On the field events for Williamson's men's SoCon, Continued on page 12 by FISH Hello fans and welcome to another addition of the Wrap-Up. I'm going to surprise everyone and do something different that I might do from now on, or not, it all depends. First and foremost, before I do anything, after reading what few lines of the punk Iredell said, all I have to respond with is this... If you think you're so bad and stuff, then how come you can't use anything original as a smackdown, I mean hell, I think everyone is tired of hearing Austin say the same damn thing every week! Don't get me wrong, I like Austin and have one of his shirts (I also have Sting so I'm not as traitorous as I may seem) but seeing him do and say the same damn thing every freakin' week has got to stop. And if you don't like it, then take it up with my friends, the Cullowhee Mafia, I'm sure they'd have a field day with you.... now on to the "extended" report. Cool... now that I have that off my chest, we've been expecting a HUGE Ric Flair announcement since we were cheated Thursday, well, according to some inside reports, before Nitro was started we knew that Flair wasn't going to be there. Flair was at a Nitro party at Clemson (now how come he can't come here!?) and we knew for sure that the inevitable re-formation of the Horsemen would be postponed again. Just to let you in on the inside scoop, I think that Flair was out beating Iredell's ass for those false WWF rumors he gave about him... and all I have to say about that is, Whoooooooooo! Anyway, look for Flair and Goldberg to be sure shots at being part of the ?Horse- men with Am as manager. As much as I hate to say it, it looks as if Benoit might not be a part of them anymore as he will probably join a "new" look Hart Foundation in WCW with the British Bulldog, Jim Neidhart, Bret Hart, Chris Jericho (I'm still not sure about him) and Chris Benoit. If this does happen, then look for all hell to break loose! And as for the last part of the surprise, I'm going to start having a "premium" area for readers who are connected to the Web. Starting next week, I'm going to start putting news and rumors in the newspaper. To get a Nitro report, or any more of the latest information, come to <www.the- carolinian.com> and find my article in the sports section, there you will find all the newest and latest information with the "extended" report! I hope everyone has a nice time, and remember Iredell... the Mafia is watching you!
