  • CAMPUS VIEWS Cartoon Our Take: Vacation! Here at Western Carolina University, students are privy to many travel opportunities. We have programs all across the world. It seems, however, that I have missed my opportunity to travel as a student here because I am set to graduate in May. Back as a sopho- more, I had begged my mother to allow me to travel abroad to England, but it seemed the cards were not in my favor with financial aid. Now, it seems that I am the only one of my friends who has not traveled outside of the United States. My lack of traveling had saddened me a bit because I know traveling has a multitude of benefits. My room- mate and best friend traveled to Japan and South Korea our sophomore year. She came back with a deeper cultural understanding of both the United States and the Asian countries that she traveled to. Not only do I yearn for deeper understanding, I also wish to explore a place that doesnt resemble my home. I want to explore what is unknown to me to break myself out of the mun- dane world I have grown to be comfortable in; I believe everyone has a bit of wanderlust inside of them. One day, my roommate came to me with an exciting and crazy idea. She asked, What if we threw caution to the wind and went on a cruise to celebrate graduation? With massive amounts of student debt to pay, now would not be the ideal time to travel; however, be- ing filled with the aforementioned wanderlust, I fully agreed to partake in a wild adventure. My cruise is set to leave a week after my May 11 graduation. We are traveling to Labadie, Haiti, Fal- mouth, Jamaica and Cozumel, Mexico. It seems like sO many adventures all in one! I am most excited about trying different cuisines in every country, and taking as many pictures as my camera can hold. I am also ec- static about the different excursions we are going to be taking as well, such as jet-skiing on the ocean or hiking in Cozumel. / . The idea of traveling is a bit nerve-wracking as well. Iam impatiently awaiting my passport, and with the cruise coming closer each day, I am more anxious with- out it. I wonder if I am going to be sea sick, and I have no real way of knowing until I am on the ship. Recent- ly, one of Royal Caribbeans cruise ships was damaged and had three cruise cancellations; details like this have \ me more on edge. My mom is constantly in my ear tell- ing me to stay close to my best friends parents who are C * accompanying us on the cruise. Still, I am sure that any r O S S W O r d Drawn by Courtney Rittle person on any trip will have his/her own set of worries. As long as the excitement outweighs the stress, Iam positive that this trip will be a worthwhile experience. I look forward to having an amazing trip to celebrate my accomplishments as a student here at Western Carolina, and the amazing moments that I have had with my roommate and best friend. I believe that this will be the most exciting send-off to propel me into the real world outside of my university.
