  • TRENDS IN STUDENT GOVERNMENTS Student govenments are active across the country and, although they do not have great influence in university governance, they are working to improve themselves and appear to be a potentially effective method for voicing student opinions and concerns. That's the picture painted by the responses to a 1984 survey of student government presidents and their advisers at National Association of Campus Activities member schools. Most student governments (59%)describe themselves as only "somewhat influential" in the college/universitv administration. Only 2%, however, say they are entirely without influence. The strongest areas of influence are in student college/university governing body (13%). the weakest areas are in university fiscal lowering of tuition and fees (3%). Role. About 80% of the student governments report being involved in recognition of student groups and college/university governance. Voter registration activities involve 69% and activities programing 64%. More than a third are part of organized political lobbying at the state and local levels. The most important roles for student governments, according to the leaders, are official representation of students to the administration and faculty (65%) and overseeing student fees and services (19%). Training. Leadership training is mostly in the form of exclusive student government workshops and retreat (64%) and 68% rated excellenttheir training as either "good" or "excellent." The leadership skills most often addressed are group organization and management(73%) and goal setting (71%).
