  • • April 19, 2000 NEWS Week Brings Greeks Together for Fun and Service by Dawn N. Pasley Asst. News Editor Last week proved to be very eventful for the fraternities and sororities on campus. Greek Week, a spring tradition at WCU, brought Inter-Fraternity Council, National Panhellenic Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council groups together for a week of activities to benefit local charities while also competing for points. Fraternities and sororities paraded down Centennial Drive Monday afternoon, kicking off the week. The parade ended at the rugby field across from Scott Hall, and the groups raced their makeshift "chariots," pulled by their members, against one another. Immediately after the race, the members headed to Dodson Cafeteria, where they participated in karaoke. Each sorority and fraternity also had the opportunity to give two awards to deserving members. These awards were both serious and humorous. On Tuesday night, the Greeks attended Club Illusions. Each sorority and fraternity was assigned to work a thirty-minute shift at the door of the club, and both Greeks and independents were welcomed inside for socializing and dancing. Many groups devoted much of their time on Wednesday to raising money for their The wheelharro w race as performed by NPC group! photo courtesy Mark Haskett/OPI and goddess than those in charge originally thought would be raised in the event. All Panhellenic proceeds were donated to the Shelter for Battered Women and the refurbishment of the Mt. Zion church. IFC proceeds were donated to the Community Table. The talent show took place on Wednesday night in the UC Grandroom. Most of the groups entered the contest, with acts both serious and silly. To get into the talent show, each member had to give two canned goods, which were donated to the Community photo courtesy Mark Haskett/OPI — ....._, r «..w^ -.mi/a nus Table in Sylva. Friday's only event, the faculty-Greek kickball game, was cancelled because of inclement weather, but groups still donated bags of used clothing to the REACH thrift store of Sylva. The store received approximately 900 articles of clothing. Greek Games were held on Saturday afternoon, after groups participated in the Tuckaseigee River Cleanup. Members competed in events such as human pyramid building, donut eating, fishing for grapes with the toes, dizzy bat, wheelbarrow race, hula hoop, three-legged race, and tug-of-war. After the games were over, the points were tabulated and Greek Week winners were announced to the waiting crowd of fraternity and sorority members. Coming out on top for the IFC groups was the Kappa Alpha Order, followed by Sigma Phi Epsilon and Pi Kappa Phi. For NPC, Alpha Xi Delta took first place, Delta Zeta won second place, and Phi Mu won third place. Harwood wished to thank those who participated in the events of the week, especially to the judges in the talent and variety show, who are faculty members. She also expressed her gratitude to the members of the fraternities and sororities. "I am so proud of the Greek system for working to benefit the community," said Harwood. Mark Haskett/OPI {
