I would also like » congratulate all of the President can- 1 ates for running in such an important race. Now comes the really important one - the elections for STUDENT SEN- °K, so you're thinking, "Big Deal, senator is not as important as the President." WRONG. Having served three of y tour years in college on Student Sen- dte> I can ^ honestly say that the senate has at, *! ' if not more importance than the President. The following is why the senate is so lmPortant: 1. The President represents the student body as a whole, each senator represents a set group of people. These senators are more likely to listen to each individual issue that people have in their area, whereas the President may have to stay more student body focused. 2. Each senator is required to submit a set number of resolutions to be voted on each semester. These resolutions help determine what changes may take place on our campus. They can be as simple as more vending machines, or something as big as increased commuter park~ng. 3. Senators come from your area of campus. Student Senate is represented with a set number of senators for the resi- dence halls, and a set number for commuters. They are more likely to be in tune with your issues and know what they are. Not to say that a President or Vice President wouldn't, but if both the President and Vice President were commuters, odds are they might not know what the Resi dence Hall issues are. 4. The senate is your main voice in SGA. Each senator is supposed to represent their constituents in all matters of campus life. I was criticized last year for passing a resolution that another campus organization approached me about. This organization didn't feel like they had a voice, so they asked me to help them out with an issue. Weather or not I believe in the issue was beside the point, they were still residents in my area, and I was sworn to serve them just like every other senator that is sworn in under oath in the first senate meeting. During this last election, I was approached by a person I had served with on Student Senate with. This person told me something to the effect that I was not representing the majority idea or majority opinion of the students. I was told that I was only going with what a minority had told me and that it would hurt me in the election. Maybe this person was right, but I figure if somebody doesn't listen to the minority, these few that also have really important issues and concerns, what is the point of having elected officials. It can be hard for a President or Vice President to take action on every single issue that comes before them. That is where senate becomes important. They are the ones that can make a difference with these issues and concerns. I encourage each and every student to vote in the upcoming senate elections. I would like to see a listing of all senate candidates for each area in the Western Carolinian. The students need to know who is representing them, and what that person stands for. My advice to each senator is represent your voters to the fullest. Talk to them, find out what their concerns are, and represent them. Jason G. Propst
