  • Iinian news September 23,1998 September 15 Officers learned that a guitar and amplifier reported stolen during the first week of school had been returned and was never stolen. Officers transported a dog to the Animal Shelter after it entered the library. While en route to the Shelter, the officer assisted a Jackson County deputy with a vehicle stop in which two WCU students were charged with possession of marijuana. September 16 Officers found a cooler containing beer beside Helder which had been abandoned at 3:40 a.m. A student reported the odor of mari- juana in Albright at 11:29 p.m. Officers checked the building but detected no such odor. Officers assisted the Jackson County Sheriff's Department at Sleepy Hollow where a fight between fraternity members of two fraternities had occurred. Witnesses stated that a shot was fired during the incident. Several students received minor injuries from the brawl. Officers arrested a male non-student for DWI and possession of a weapon on campus at 0345. September 17 A student reported that someone let the air out of her tires while her car was parked in the Walker A Lot between 9/16 and 9/17. Officers assisted the Jackson County Sheriff's Department with a DWI arrest on Speedwell Road at 12:45 a.m. Officers checked the area of Benton where a student reported hearing sounds like a gun shot at 0309. No contact with any suspects and the witness stated that it could have been firecrackers. Officers transported two dogs to the Animal Shelter which were found loose on campus at 7:00 p.m. on 9/19. On 9/ 20, shelter employees reported a break- in. One dog was missing. The incident is being investigated by the Sheriff's Department. At 5:30 p.m. on 9/20, officers delivered an emergency message to a doctor who was at the driving range. A student in Walker reported that someone had accessed his computer without authorization and changed his password at 12:00 a.m. on 9/21. September 18-20 Officers picked up a stray kitten on Centennial Drive at 9:30 p.m. on 9/18. Officers continue to search for the owner. A student reported a fire in a trash can located in the laundry room on the north end of Reynolds Hall at 11:23 p.m. on 9/18. Students extinguished the fire. It appears that someone set the fire in the trash can. The only damage was to the trash can which was melted. September 21 An incident of what appeared to be unauthorized access to a student's computer account reported yesterday was found to have been caused by the student's failure to log off a terminal in the University Center. The case is unfounded. In District Court in Sylva, a student was found not guilty of DWI, but was found guilty of reckless driving and a provisional licensee violation. The student was fined $ 150 and costs, placed on probation for one year, and must perform 24 hours of community service work. Officers investigated a "report of reckless driving in a state-owned vehicle at 3:18 p.m. The driver and occupants, both students, were identified by their supervisor. Disciplinary action is pending.
