  • Iinian 5K Road Race Expects Good Turnout by Eric Stevens Staff Writer Every year, just as fall rolls in, Western Carolina University holds the annual Mountain Heritage Day. With the return of this day comes the return of the Mountain Heritage 5K Road Race. The Honors Student Board of Directors organized the race this year and will be the beneficiary of the money raised in the event. Some local companies, including Subway, Radio Shack, Four Seasons Sports, LuLu's, Wal-Mart, Arby's, and The Trophy Shop helped by sponsoring the event. Dr. Brian Railsback, the Dean of the Honors College, said, "It [the 5K Road Race] is important to The Honors College because it's one of our community-based projects. It is good for us and for the University." Western is hoping for a large turnout this year. According to Jason Sheets, the Alumni/Faculty Relations chairperson of The Honors College's Board of Directors, "Last year's turnout was pretty good, we had about 110 to 120 racers. This year we're hoping for more." The first event of this year's festivities, the "Fun Run," will begin at 9 a.m. This race is for children 12 and under and will consist of four laps (one mile) around the WCU track. The 5K will begin at 9:15 a.m. near the track. The route planned for the race will cover some of the Women's cross country course utilized in the first two meets held in Cullowhee, as well as some running on the track. All finishers will receive a T-shirt for their efforts. The race is open to anyone who wants to participate, including runners and walkers. Go to the Honors College, in Stillwell G-55, to enter the race. The entry fee is $13 before Friday, and $ 15 on the day of the race. Food and beverages will be provided for all participants. Commentary by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Many excuses have been given in Cullowhee for not attending athletic events at Western Carolina University. However, the administration in around campus have tried, partially in vain, to encourage students to not only come out and support the teams, bnj to also come out and be vocal. The fall semester starts out with two main sports in the headlines are football and volleyball. Between these two, there will be over 20 contests on Near the end of the fall, there will be mem's and, yes, women's basketball. So, those out there that continue to hang on to that old excuse. "There's nothing to do in Cullowhee, I think that you need to re-think your argument. Another excuse or reason that students give for not supporting the athletic teams is, Ithe teams suck!" Once again, this argument needs to be looked at more closely and carefully. Both the menfs football team and the women's volleyball team boast winning home records. In fact, both have over a 60% winning percentage (foot ball 61 %, volleyball 60.4%) when playing in friendly Cullowhee. Finally, I would like to propose something n somewhat of a challenge to the student body — something that we can start this semester with football and volleyball, and carry over to basketball and baseball in the spring semester. Let's be loud! Try this n When junior tailback Brat! Hoover busts through an opponent's defensive line for a gain, let loose with a shower of "HOOV!!!" from your seats in Whitmire Stadium. Or when senior Keeya McManus, or any of our volleyball players slams home a spike for a point, shout out "Point WESTERN!" Get involved and lets support our teams. Volleyball has already started with their home season and attendance and participation has been good. But there could be more. Continue the excitement and let's build on it. This weekend, the football team, which as performed well in their first two games, comes home for the first time for Mountain Heritage Day versus the East Tennessee State Buccaneers. Let's introduce WCU and the surrounding mountain community to Catamount Fever! Come out and be loud! Rugby "Storms" Wilmington by Mark Smith & Dave Peterson The Western Carolina University Rugby team opened their season this past Saturday with a historical 7-5 victory over UNC Wilmington. In eight years of rugby at WCU a Catamount team had never defeated a UNC-W side. The UNC Wilmington program was the 1996-97 Rugby State Champion. Following the game, team captain Dave Peterson commented, "Western has finally fulfilled their potential. This result shows that as a Division I-AA school, we can be competitive and defeat Division I rugby programs." Western started quickly after their $1250 FUNDRAISER Credit Card fundraiser for student organizations. You've seen other groups doing it, now it's your turn. One week is all it takes. NO gimmicks, NO tricks, NO obligation. Call for information today. 1-800-932-0528 x 65. www.ocmconcepts.com seven hour journey, but were unable to capitalize on some early pressure. Then at the stroke of half time and against the run of play Wilmington scored their only points of the game, but were unable to add the two point conversion. After half time it was all one way traffic with Western constantly threatening the Seahawks line. Western finally capitalized on this barrage of pressure when Shawn Parker scored in the minute 61. Shea Bridges duly converted to put WCU 2 points ahead. Late in the game, Wilmington applied constant pressure, however the Catamount defense stood strong throughout to seal a WCU win. The Catamounts B side also defeated a strong Wilmington side 26-15. Following these victories, the Catamounts will next take on the 1997-98 state champions, North Carolina State in Asheville this Saturday. Anyone interested in joining can either contact Coach Mark Smith at 227- 7333 or attend practice on Tuesday through Thursday, from 4-6 p.m. on the field behind Reid Gym.
