  • November 1-2 PORTER'S FLATS—DRY SLUICE GAP* The true lover of nature who prefers untamed beauty, untouched wildness, utter freedom in the open, will respond fully to the appeal of the giant trees which make Porter's Flats a place of particular interest to Smoky Mountain hikers. For genuine beauty, unmarred by the encroach- hand of man, Porter's Flats stands unquestionably high in the minds of those who have been fortunate enough to wind with the trail through this wilderness of great trees and hikers will not make a mistake in deciding to make this trip. When your feet carry you lightly along the moss covered and rock lined trail through Porter's Flats and as you cross and re-cross the delightful stream that is one of the tributaries .of Abe Little Pigeon River, you forget all your cares and give yourself wholly to a real thrill—the human reaction to the beauty of the great out-of-doors. You will begin to breathe more deeply than usual and as you become filled with clean, pure air you can't help but feel a stab of pity for the folks back home who think they are more comfortable in steam heated apartments, filled with soot laden air, than we poor deluded hikers who would rather rough it in the great open spaces. However, it's a question for each person to decide for himself. If there are any who accomnany the Hiking Club on a trip such as the Porters Flats hike and, after tramping along delightful trails and enjoying appetizing meals in the open, are not satisfied with their choice of diversion, then these will be better left at home next time. After traversing the flats and on approaching Dry Sluice Gap, near the ridges which have been appropriately called the Saw Tooth Range, you will view at your right a group of peaks which are •While this is a very fine hike, it is a hard one. Another hike, an easy one-day trip, is scheduled for this same weekend. Take your choice. 59
