  • good, as is the view of Knoxville, to the southwest. I But the best view of all is that peaceful valley tol the north, with the Cumberland mountains in the | distance. Leave Saunders System at 1 P. M. Round- trip hiking distance about 3 miles. Trail smooth but steep. Take food for supper, if you like, but in any event take a canteen. Leaders: Flora Maloy (Phone 2—2992) and Parke L. Brown (Phone 2—2181) February 22-23 BRUSHY, via CHEROKEE ORCHARD The night of Washington's birthday will be spent at the Mt. View Hotel at Gatlinburg. We will, no doubt, get to see those splendid movies of the Smokies that Jack Huff has made. Sunday morning we will drive to Cherokee Orchard and hike across the tail-end of Rocky Spur, via Sherman Clafoo's home and thru Spruce Flats to Beech Gap and out to Brushy. On this shrub-covered, but treeless, summit we are treated to one of the Smokies' rarest views. We look down, to the northeast, on Greenbrier and across this picturesque little cove to Greenbrier Pinnacle, Mt. Guyot and Mt. Lumadaha. To the south and southwest, we look up to Mt. LeConte, grandstand of all the Great Smokies. While it is yet too early to be called spring, we will probably find a few of the earliest spring flowers. We have, on numerous occasions, found bluets, violets, trailing arbutus and other wild- flowers peeping thru January and February snows. Leave Saunders System at 4 p. m. Saturday. Take food for Sunday lunch (or have it prepared at Mt. View). Take canteen and candle lantern. Round trip hiking distance 10 or 11 miles. Trail smooth but steep near the top. Elevation 5000 ft. Cost: transportation, about $2.10 each; hotel bill, about $2.00 each. Leaders: Lucien C. Green (Phone 2-3195) and Elizabeth Cheatham. 18
