  • On our left just before reaching the Bluffs, we will find a Nesting Place of the duck hawks, called the Alum Cave Peaks, although later referred to as the "Duck Hawk Peaks". Look close and you will see the Needle's Eye, a large hole through one of the Rocky Peaks. This is the first time this hike has been scheduled, for before we had the new highway it was considered a very good hike to Grassy Patch, which we are now able to take as our starting point. You can't afford to miss this hike, as it is one of the most enjoyable hikes of the year, and an ideal Labor Day jaunt. Leave Saunders System at 8 o'clock. Bring food for one meal—and a well-filled canteen. Round trip hiking distance about 4 miles. Leaders: Meta Schwoegl (Phone 2—2153) and Mrs. Hugh M White (Phone 3—5362). September 13-14 COVE MOUNTAIN This is our first scheduled trip to Cove Mountain. Our last year's visit to this splendid vantage point was decided upon after it was found not advisable at that time to make the hike which had been scheduled for Sharp Top. We found this hike to be very similar to the Rich Mountain trip, and the view equal to that from Round Top, or better. After spending the night at Line Springs Hotel we will start on the hike about 8 o'clock Sunday morning. The distance is a[bout 5 miles each way. We start out thru Wear's Cove, and will probably stop at "Huse" Lawson's home to take a peep at what is said to be the world's largest chestnut tree. When you see the tree you will be willing enough to believe it is really the largest. It is some sapling—over 25 feet in circumference, three feet above the ground. Passing out of the cove, the trail ascends the mountain side at a steep rate. We get numerous views of interest along the way, but when we get on top—we see everything. Most impressive of 52
