We go via Sevierville and Gatlinburg and drive up the new Indian Gap highway and park our cars about 2 miles beyond the Indian Gap Hotel. Cost of transportation about $2.25 each. Those who desire may organize a group to spend the night at Mountain View Hotel at Gatlinburg or at the Indian Gap Hotel. Take State Highway No. 1. At Main Street in Kingston you come to the beginning of the Walton Road, known before that as the Avery Trace. In 1799 the State granted Walton a permit to build a "wooden road" from Kingston to the Cumberland settlements. For a quarter of a century previous the route had been used. It ran from Southwest Point to Post Oak Springs, to near Rockwood, then straight across the mountains. It crossed Fall creek about a half mile above the Falls. Then over Spencer Hill, named for one of the earliest hunters who was killed there in 1794. Next it Passed thru Crab Orchard Gap where two battles took place between the Whites and Indians. Then thru "The Crab Orchard" and on west about where the railroad is at present. After 1801 the State furnished a guard of about fifty to escort the pioneers thru this section. Large num'bers of the earliest settlers of the west passed over the Walton Toad. When you arrive at Ozone, park your cars on the south side of the Highway -fust- beyond Fall Creek bridge. Go down the Highway to the path leading underneath the Falls. Keen to the left. Pass under the Falls and up along the cliffs. You 43
