  • Bubba Wilson out for two games DECEMBER 1, 1977/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 7 Catamount guard declared ineligible W< U. which opened its I477---H basketball season luesday nlghl at home against Campbell College, has announced that guard Bubba Wilson, the Cats' onlv returning letterman, is Ineligible for the first two games. Wilson was declared ineligible by the NCAA Eligibility Committee alter an investigation into Wt I s program which concluded early this fall with WCU being placed on one year of probation. "We don't believe this is a fair ruling.'' said Western Athletic Director Boh Waters. "It is unfair because of the circumstances and the significance of the infractions involving Bubba. He was unaware al the time that his actions were violations." Waters said. Wilson was not able to play against either Campbell lucsdav night, or C'arson-Newman, which plays in Culllowhee tonight. "It will definitely hurt us." siad first-war coach sieve Cottrell, "But. this team has become accustomed to adversity. We'll just grit our teeth and go on. Wilson would have been a doubtful starter for the Campbell game anyway since he has been sidelined for a week with a strained knee. Cottrell figures to start freshman Larry Caldwell and shophomore Jimmy McCallister at the guards, with McCallister being Wilson's replacement. "With that lineup we will have absolutely no experience," said Cottrell. "For all practical purposes. we'll be just like a freshman team playing its first game. But. we are ready to plav." "Losing a player the caliber of Bubba Wilson for one minute or one game makes a difference." he said. "However, one thing is for certain, this team has won me over...the heart is there to be a successful team." "We will try to win games with hustle, attitude and determination. I couldn't ask these players to do more than they've done in the last six weeks we've been together trying to get ready. There's no doubt in my mind they have accepted the challenge." Cottrell said.
