  • In a letter to Horace Kephart on November 16, 1921, Martin Baker writes from Birmingham, England in search of “smoke tanned caribou moccasins” that he read about in “Camping and Woodcraft.”
  • 28 Saint Paul's Square, Birmingham. England. November 16th. 1921. Dear Sir, As a -delighted reader of your book, "Camping and Woodcsaft" may I venture to ask for help ? It is not possible to obtain "smoke tanned caribou moccasins in this country, can you put me in touch with a firm who can supply ?. I want about ■$■ dozen pairs, suitable for camping and canoe work, size as outline of foot enclosed, (which is wearing one army sock of normal thickness to give an idea.) As you are doubtless aware, the shoes obtainable here are all for town wear, and your description, combined with what I have already learned, emboldens me to try and get the real thing. My camping has for years combined canoeing, and dry fl$ fishing for trout, including some tramping light, but the possibilities here are of course limited.
