May 16, 1898 Haubstadt Indiana Mr. Horace Kephart, Dear Sir: I notice in S. and F. that you have organized Mo. riflemen of St. Louis into a “sharpshooter’s” company. I am heartily in sympathy with that movement; and if I lived near your city I should surely apply for admissions. I do not think I would be a disgrace to your company either as far as marksmanship is concerned. If there is a need for us could I not in some way attach myself to your company?

In this letter of May 16, 1898, F. C. Heim writes Horace Kephart to let him know he has seen Kephart’s advertisement in the publication “Shooting and Fishing.” Heim is wondering if he could be in Kephart’s Sharpshooter organization even though he does not live in Saint Louis. He describes his physical characteristics and his shooting abilities along with his desire to fight for the country in the Spanish-American War.
