Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • Boonville, New York May 25, 1951 Dear Lucy: Your telephone call took me so by surprize [sic] yesterday that I could not get my wits to working. Roy and I thought that inasmuch as you will be very much involved with your own affairs during the time of reunion, we should not intrude unnecessarily at that time, So we made reservations to stay at Baker and Balch respectively, on the nights of June 8th and 9th. You must not count on our being in Ithaca on the night of June 7th either, because we do not know what hour we may leave Long Island and we will very likely decide to spend that night some place enroute New York to Ithaca. In that way we will have the most possible time with Marnie etc. and still reach Ithaca early enough to register and get comfortably settled before noon on the 8th. So don’t figure our staying at your place at all, much as we appreciate the invitation! I don’t like to impose another problem on you at this time when your hands and heart are more than full. But what I now have to say is toward your own interest. Naturally, I have given considerable thought to your expressed plan to take Grannie to Ithaca late in July so that she can have a visit there and at the same time relieve Roy and me. In view of all that is in store for you between now and then and the likelihood that you will be too tired out to undertake such a task in July, I suggest that an alternate plan should be in readiness to put in opperation [sic], should you be unable to carry out your plan. I am forced to this decision because it is becoming daily more and more important that we be relieved of the care and presence of Grannie by July 25th. Two things have occurred recently which make this necessary. (1.) Our tenants have told us that they would like to live here another year;but that if Grannie is still here when they return from Summer School, they will definitely look for another place to live. There is one ### place they know about already. But they would much prefer to stay here. (2.) Marnie writes that Dale’s vacation starts July 27th. They would like to spend the time with us in Boonville;but “of course, if Grannie is there, we won’t.” I might also add that when Laura was threatened with a miscarriage in April, she and Jimmie stayed here three or four days; but then she went back to Syracuse with Jimmie, rather than stay on here. I hasten to add that the doctor here and two doctors in Syracuse were very definite in saying that her miscarriage was inevitable because the infant did not get started right and was not properly attached to begging with, hence nothing Laura could do or not do would have had any effect. I tell you this because I don’t wan t to give the impression that her miscarriage was brought on by her returning to Syracuse. (Also I know that Grannie has spread the wrong information on this matter. In fact, she was asked not to say anything about Laura’s preg- nancy ; but she did. Then she went all out to tell that the reason for the unfortunate outcome was that Jimmie was not taking care of his wife as he should. That is simply not so. He made Laura stop working at the library long before this happened. And no man could have been kinder. Grannie just had to rationalize her own antipathy.) As long as Grannie is here (1.) We cannot rent our apartment; (2.) The girls refuse to come home; (3.) I have had to give up even a part-time job and have not been able to add to our income for two years; and (4.) Roy’s happiness and reputation are at stake. We can get along until late July; but then ### Grannie must be take care of elsewhere.
