  • 1. Take the series of typhoid inoculations every three years. They cause no more than temporary discomfort and are of great help in warding off possible infections. 2. Bring your drinking water from Knoxville or get it from some source known to be safe. 3. If you are uncertain as to the purity of the water you are obliged to use, the following treatments may be used to insure adequate sterilization: a. Boil the water for 5 minutes. Cool and aerate before using. b. Chemical, but harmless, sterilization can be done by anyone. Get from your druggist or grocer a can of fresh "chloride of lime" (chlorinated lime) and add a teaspoonful of this powder to a pint of cool water. Take some of this solution on your trip, and use two teaspoonfuls of it to five gallons of water or twenty drops to one quart. Mix Avell and let stand at least fifteen minutes before using. This water may have a slight chlorine taste, but it is absolutely harmless. A fresh solution should be prepared for each trip; both powder and solution should be kept in a cool, dark place. INSTRUCTIONS TO LEADERS The duties and obligations of the hike leaders include the following: 1. Know the trail, or learn it before the date of your hike. 2. Confer with your co-leader in advance and make plans for conducting the hike. 3. Make advance arrangements for lodging where necessary. 4. Be at Dixie System 15 or 20 minutes before schedule time for departure. See that cars are ready, assign hikers to cars, etc. 56
