4 Me and my children I now pray more earnestly and with more faith for I feel like I had help and at least apart (sic) of my prayers has bin (sic) answered I send Charley and Brad a Barlow knife a peace (sic) with each of their names cut on the handle tell them to be good boys tell Charley that I sent him and Kitty Lizzy and dollie some candy in place of sugar kiss them all for me and receive about 20 yourself tell me whether dollie can walk or not you don't say anything about her I shall accuse you of not careing (sic) anything about her if you don't say something about her in your next write soon and often don't wait for to get a letter from me I will write once a week and send them to Athens directed to you you must write ever (sic) week for half of the letters don't go from here to Athens that is sent H. M. Misemer burn this as soon as you read it and let no let no eye see it.

The events of this undated letter written by Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) to his wife, Martha suggest that it was written in spring of 1864. H. M. informs his wife that he has sent some things with John Wright for her and the children. He tells her that if someone “goes to see the Sherriff of Monroe County and get him to appoint me as deputy sheriff I can get a discharge,” but she must not let anyone know. He tells her that his comrades respect him and anyone else trying to be a Christian, but they do not tolerate anyone who does not act like a Christian. He asks her to write every week and to burn the letter as soon as she reads it.
