[inferred between June and November of 1864] Well Martha I hardly know what to say about you staying where you are for if you leave and the yanks comes a long will think the place belongs a reb that has gone south and will burn ever thing that burn and I fear the [rebs] will make a raid through that artry [artery] and take every thing th will be made and the people will have to starve yet and [?] dont know how you can get [?] unless I could get to come home and that is impossible [?] present I know of no bett[er] way than to trust to provid[e] the Lord has protected [me] so far and will continue [to] do so if we will only trust him let us try to trust in fa[ther]

In this letter written sometime between July and November 1864, Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) writes his wife, Martha. H. M. Misemer shares his worry that the Rebels will come through where Martha lives and burn and take everything so they may starve. He believes the Lord will protect them. He says that he was told in confidence by an officer that they would be heading to East Tennessee so that they could vote in the upcoming election for President Lincoln and Vice President Andrew Jackson. Note that a few words on the edges are cut off or missing indicated by brackets on the transcript.
