  • [inferred between June and November of 1864] Well Martha I hardly know what to say about you staying where you are for if you leave and the yanks comes a long will think the place belongs a reb that has gone south and will burn ever thing that burn and I fear the [rebs] will make a raid through that artry [artery] and take every thing th will be made and the people will have to starve yet and [?] dont know how you can get [?] unless I could get to come home and that is impossible [?] present I know of no bett[er] way than to trust to provid[e] the Lord has protected [me] so far and will continue [to] do so if we will only trust him let us try to trust in fa[ther]
