Martha you said something about what I owed Johnnie , I dont know anything about what I owe him I dont want you to pay him any thing tel I get home let him sweat and I will give him his dues when I come home you said for me to write him a letter and tell him that I would give him his dues I decline writing for if I make any threats I will have to suffer for any thing that is done to him no difference who does it And I would rather tell him to his face what I think of him Oh I had like to have forgotten to tell you I got a letter Wm B Misemer of Riceville McMinn Co Tennessee the other day, here is what he says after telling me that his and my familyes were well Marsh

Description

In this letter of April 11, 1864, Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) writes his "Dear wife," Martha Misemer, from Nashville, Tennessee. He says they have moved about eight miles north and he think it is to avoid the smallpox outbreak occurring in Nashville. He reports he is in good health but that his "first Major" died from the disease. He discusses the possibility of furlough and why they are not likely to get it. He lets her know that he sent her money, but it came back to him and he will send more along with the things that she requested and lets her know he will help pay for her to hire help. He relays that he received a letter from Wm B. Misemer in McMinn County, Tennessee who is on the Confederate side of the war. He also lets her know that no one opens his letters unless he will not be there for awhile so that they can be answered.
