Murphy N. C. Oct. 10th 1883 My Dear Wife: I put off writing yesterday till it was too late to get a letter in, and then deferred till today. So far I have had the dullest time I have ever had at this court or at a court here. I think however, I will sell a piece of land tomorrow, and probably make some collections before I leave. I think I will get home about the middle of next week. I shall certainly not delay my return one moment later than I can help. I wish you would look in the black trunk or in one of my valices and get a large bundle of papers marke - “Swain”

In this letter of October 10, 1883, James W. Terrell writes to his wife Lulu (Sarah Louise Woodfin Terrell) about his time in court and selling land. He instructs her to send a package of land grants in Swain County to Charleston, South Carolina in order that he may sell land to Mr. Ferguson. James Terrell married Sarah after the death of his first wife, Ann Eliza Terrell (1834-1870).
