on the road for half price if you bring anything for the soldiers they will let you come for half price. It is said that any body that has a son in the army can come for half price. I have nothing to write about but hard times and I have wrote enough about them. When you write after this direct to A. P. Hills Division, General Penders Brigade, 34th Regiment. Direct also to Gordonsville, Va. I want you to write often and if you put Hills Division, Pender's Brigade, I will get the letter no accts. It has been some time since I got a letter from home, and it has been some time since I wrote one home, for there is three weeks since times that I have no chance to write. Write soon and give me all the news. Certain you must excuse bad writing and spelling and composure. I often think of the orchard. G. J. Huntley

In this letter of August 15, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends from his location near Gordonsville, Virginia to let them know he is unwell. He was in a fight but “came out without the mark of a bullet on me.” He hears that family is coming to visit and if they do, they can travel for half price by carrying something for the soldiers. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
