Knowing and loving the Great Smokies, Kephart realize! something should be done to save them for posterity 'This made nun a staunch advocate of a national park in The Great .Smokies. He translated his feelings and those of other persons into telling words and phrases and his messages reached into far places. He became known as the Apostle of the Great Smokies. Other authors took up the idea, including Margaret \V. MOrtey. in -lhe Carolina Mountains (1913), she said of the Great Smok.es: "And over these splendid slopes, one sees in imagination the protecting arm of the new national park reach out, as it soon will, to save them forever from the power of the destroyer." The people of East Tennessee also took up the idea. In 192., Mrs. Willis P. Davis, of Knoxville, Tenn., visualized sue. a park for East Tennessee while admiring the beauty and grandeur of the Yellowstone National Park in the West. ane promptly voiced the thought to her husband. "Why these mountains here are no more beautiful than our mountains at home. Why couldn't we have a national park?" she asked MT. Uavis became enthusiastic over the idea and, upon his return to Knoxvi]le, he mentioned it to a number of men and later^called a meeting in the office of D. C. Webb, an attorney. At this meeting, in 192,5, Mr. Webb, Cowan Rodgers. Col. I n ■£ ■ ha'"mn- Wilt'y Brownlee, Judge H. B. Lindsey, J I*. Wright, and Mr. Davis organized the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association. Mr. Davis was elected president and Col. Chapman, who later became chairman of tne I ennessee Park Commission, was named chairman of the Doard. 1 he specific purpose of the association was to interest me l-etlera government in establishing a national park in the Great Smokies. Davis and other members of the association held con- v t ", I ! ^'l>,U'n T' Mather' th™ director of the National Park Service, and with other officials of the U. S. department of the Interior. This 146-page “Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park” was published in 1933, a year before the park was formally established. In spite of this oddity, the guide does carry the approval of the National Park Service, stated on its cover. The book was printed in a small format as a field guide that could be carried on a hike. Topics covered in the guide include tours and trails, notes on camping and fishing, and sections on flowers and fauna. Separate sections deal with local culture, including “The Highlanders” and “The Cherokee Indians.” The guide was written by George McCoy and George Masa. McCoy was a staff writer for the Asheville Citizen and native of Dillsboro, North Carolina. Photographer George Masa, a native of Japan, was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
