Friday, April 22, 1966 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE 5 Unusual Spring Festival Planned For May 9-14 By Mickey Lively Thoughts of May Day may bring to your mind last year's festivities or even those of the year before, but chances are slim! May Day, in past years, has not offered much for the student body to enjoy, much less to rememebr. May Day in schools across the nation has deviated considerably from the original purpose of the holiday. It was originally held in celebration of the rites of spring, and the arrival of spring just isn't what it used to be — at least not on a college campus. This year, May Day, as it used to be called, will be replaced by a "Spring Festival," and events will last an entire week. The May Day Central Committee headed by Miss Ginger Lathan has an unusual program planned for our first Spring Festival. The program will begin Monday, May 9 and continue through Saturday, May 14. On Monday, music lovers will be interested In a Sing-Out '66 to be held on Woodland stage at 7:00 P.M. The program will consist of a variety of entertainment and groups will compete for a trophy. The Mark IV Combo will provide music Tuesday evening for a street dance to be held in Joyner Square. This event will be sponsored by the College Center Board. On Wednesday or Thursday the Physical Education Department will sponsor the annual Field Day to be held behind Reid gymnasium. All persons interested in the track and field program are urged to enter the events. The Little Theatre will add to the festiv- Glnger Lathan, Chairman Central May Day Committee ities by presenting the Broadway production of "My Fair Lady" beginning on Wednesday and running through Friday night. There will also be BELK'S DEPT. STORE "The Home of Better Values" "Entire Line of Popular Priced Clothes For All College Students" Jackson County's Leading Department Store 586-2015 SYLVA, N. C. H. J. Landls, Manager MASHBURN'S SHOE SHOP Satisfaction Guaranteed Fast Dependable Service 7 Mill Street Sylva, N. C. Your Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge and Dodge Truck Dealer See The New 66's Complete Body Shop a 1:00 matinee on Saturday. The Student Senate will contribute its part to the celebration on Friday night in Breese Gymnasium when it will present Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Alpha Phi Omega, International Service Fraternity will sponsor a "Cullowhee Olympics" on Saturday. Events will include a greased pig chase, a Volks tote, a chariot race, pie eating contest and other "feats of skill." Spring Festival will end on Saturday night with a formal dance in Reid when Miss Judy Clontz will be crowned May Queen. The Spring Festival will certainly be something new for Western Carolina. Whether or not it is a success will depend on the student body. If you want to complain a- bout "May Day" this year, be sure to attend the events so you will know what you are complaining about. Ginger had this to say concerning the new undertaking; "To meet the needs of a growing college, the May Day Central Committee enlarged the annual May Day into a Spring Festival so that more students could be accommodated and each person could find something to his liking. We hope that this year's festival will be successful enough to start a tradition that will be carried out and expanded in years to come."
