's First Occupational Safety Program Certified Western Carolina University is the first university in North Carolina to have a professional Occupational Safety program certified by the North Carolina Industrial Commission. The Department of Industrial Education and Technology at WCU coordinates the five- course sequence leading to the Professional Occupational Safety Certificate awarded by the School of Technology and Applied Science in conjunction with the Industrial Commission. The Occupational Safety program includes five university courses: Personal and Community Health, Emergency Medical Care. Industrial Safety, Environmental Instrumentation, and Management of Safety Systems. Students considering a full-time career in occupational safety and training or employment in light industry and small business where safety responsibilities may be collateral with other duties, can select these safety courses as electives to fulfill certificate course requirements. Students completing the safety certificate program will have an edge on other job applicants. The certification can enhance the qualifications of chemistry majors for careers in toxic substance control, of biology majors for wastewater treatment, of environmental health majors for industrial hygiene, of geology majors for mine safety inspection, of business majors for facilities management, and of nursing majors for industrial nursing. Industrial Technology majors who complete the safety certificate will have completed course work which closely parallels the curriculum of an Industrial Safety Degree Program extending their potential for employment in the safety field. People employed in industry "are eligible for the Occupational Safety Certificate. Knowledge of occupational safety operation will enhance an employee's potential for promotion and career advancement. It will help a supervisor protect his employer's financial investment through contemporary management of occupational safety and health systems. And it will upgrade the general level of health and safety among employees. Credit will be given for courses previously taken at Western Carolina University. Cats Ranked In National Poll Last Saturday's impressive win over Tennessee-Chattanooga caught the attention of enough NCAA Division I-AA pollsters to push the Catamounts into the top 20. It is the first time in WCU's two-year membership in Division I-AA that the Catamounts have been ranked and the first time since 1976 that the Cats have shown up in any poll. The appearance in the top 20 is the first step in WCU's quest for a post-season playoff berth if they should not win the Southern Conference championship. OPI—The New Swingle Singers, a vocal ensemble hailed worldwide as masters of classical scat, or "mouth music." will perform at 8 pm Thursday. Nov. IO, in Hoey Auditorium at Western Carolina University. Each of the group's eight vocalists are trained in the British choral tradition, but while they sing Bach with precise techniques and harmony of classical music, they also draw from America's jazz greats: Louis Armstrong, Ella Fit/gerald and Duke Ellington., The result, according to a review in the Detroit Free Press, is the "kind of superbly satisfying performance that broke down all the barriers that separate music into categories. For once, Kern and Bach and Berlin and Mo/art and Porter and Handel existed side by side." The chief technique the ensemble extracts from the jazz era is that of scat, a type of singing in which meaningless words-like doobie doobie do da day—are improvised, often to imitate the sounds of musical instruments. Using this technique, it is not uncommon for the Swingle Singers to move from Mozart to Joplin and from Gilbert and Sullivan to Lennon and McCartney, producing a fresh and integrated sound that has carried them to success. The original group was formed in the I960's by Ward Swingle with a rcpetoire of classical baroque. When the Paris-based ensemble disbanded in I973, Swingle moved to London to form a new group with an infinitely wider and more varied range of composers and styles. 6
