I news February 4,1998 ^Carolinian Public Safety Asks Students Bye-Bye to for Help in Book Theft Case by Gene McAbee On Tuesday, January 27, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a. m., a series of thefts occurred in Forsyth and Killian Annex. These thefts may be related, and Public Safety asks that everyone be alert for suspicious activity in and around offices. In Forsyth, a college-aged white male entered a professor's office on the second floor and stole three books. The male was tall, had blond hair and was wearing a dark blue or black jacket and a cap. He was carrying a blue backpack. In addition, another professor had a set of keys stolen during the same time period, and a third professor found that books were missing from his office. Shortly afterward, staff members in the DEC saw a college-aged male enter an office there. It is believed that he may have stolen a laptop computer from that office. The physical description of that person was similar, though he was wearing a white jacket. You will not be able to identify these thieves by the physical descriptions available. They will at times be connected to book-buying companies. You should be suspicious of anyone going door to door with offers to buy books. Remember, those individuals must have a solicitation permit issued by the Business Office. Door-to-door solicitation is a Bailey's by Tina Chastain violation of the University's policy on solicitation. The University Police Department suggests that you be alert for individuals who wander in and out of open rooms. If questioned, they may be prepared to answer that they are looking for a specific person. We also suggest that those of you who have offices close and lock your office doors when you are not in the office. Chief Bill Hollingsed is investigating the incidents. If you have information, please call him at 227-7301. Continued from PUSH on page 2 vehicle had driven on the yard. Officers discovered that a vehicle had rolled from a space in the Reid lot at 10:06 a.m. and struck another vehicle. Damage was minimal. Sunday, February 1,1998 Officers responded to a fire alarm at Walker at 8:25 a.m. caused by a dusty detector head. A student reported that someone had scratched his car while it was parked in the Field House lot. Officers attended a Panhellenic Council meeting as a part of community policing programs. A student reported that her car was damaged while it was parked near Leatherwood. January 30-February 1,1998 Grounds supervisors reported that a concrete trash receptacle had been rolled downstairs between Leatherwood and Belk and destroyed on 1/30. The value of the receptacle is $350. The investigation continues. Officers responded to Harrill, where Housing staff reported damage to a pull station box and graffiti on the 5th floor. Housekeepers at Coulter reported that they saw a white male, student age, jerk open a lobby door, enter and take an instrument from a locker at ll:20p.m 1/30. Officers responded to a fire alarm at Scott caused by line trouble at 12:10 a.m on 1/31. A student reported that a laptop computer was stolen from her room in Helder. A student reported that her car was damaged by a hit & run driver in a commuter lot near the University Center on 1/31. Two students reported a conflict on the highway off-campus with approximately five persons in a car on 1/31. Officers assisted two international students who had been locked out of Reid Gym on 1/31. Officers responded to a report of intoxicated persons causing a disturbance on the 7th floor of Harrill at 12:16 a.m. on 2/1. Student workers reported that three male students had knocked over barricades on the handicapped circle at Ramsey at I :37 a.m on 2/1. The incident is referred to Student Development. Student workers reported a suspicious person and a security violation at Niggli Theatre at 1:25 a.m on 2/1. Officers picked up two stray dogs and transported them to the owner's residence. The owner was warned about the policy of dogs on campus. February 2,1998 Two male students who were seen en- Popular Sylva hangout Bailey's Bar and Grill has closed, leaving many WCU students asking why. An anonymous source close to the Bailey's establishment has stated that the closing was due of "delinquent payments." Regardless of why, many WCU students are feeling the absence of one of the Catamounts' favorite hangouts. One of them is freshman Jenny Sircey, who stated that she "will miss getting dressed up and going dancing, because there isn't a wide variety of things to do in Cullowhee." Erin Byrnes, sophomore, stated, "College night was fun, but the Monday night wrestling was even better." Although there are many people here and around campus that will miss the ever-so-popular Bailey's, some are glad to see it gone. One student who wished to remain anonymous commented, "I am so glad that that dump is closed. Who needs a bunch of random drunk drivers anyway." There has been talk of mystery buyers coming in and rescuing the hopes of many students by making another club or hangout for people to go to. So far this is only speculation. tering Stillwell at 11:25 a.m. on Saturday night were identified and questioned. The incident is referred to the Dean of the College of Arts and Science for follow-up. A female student reported that a male exposed himself to her as she was walking by the Episcopal Church above the Ramsey Center at approximately 3:00 p.m. A similar incident occurred last Tuesday. The description of the suspect was a white male, brown hair not recently cut, wearing a black t-shirt with a design and blue jeans. A student in Reynolds reported conflicts between herself and two male students which have resulted in threats of damage to her ve hide and sexual harassment. Officers interviewed one suspect and referred the incident to Housing for action. Officers investigated a traffic accident on Belk Drive which occurred following the WCU/ASU basketball game. Student workers reported fireworks being discharged at Harrill Hall at 11:23 p.m. When officers arrived, no more fireworks were detected. Officers assisted Housing staff and the WCU EMS team with an intoxicated student in Walker at 2:10 a.m. An international student who was involved in a serious traffic accident two weeks ago requested transportation to the emergency when experienced stomach pains.
