G. J. Huntley to friends, May 31, 1863

  • wcu_civil_war-393.jp2
  • In this short letter of May 31, 1863, G. J. Huntley writes his friends from his location in Camp Gregg near Guiney Station, Virginia in case his last two letters were lost. He is asking for nice clothing and shoes as he is now a Lieutenant. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
  • Camp Gregg near Guiney Station, Va. May the 31 /63 Dear friends I drop you a few lines to inform you of my present situation. I am in common health and common only. My health is not as good as it has been. I have wrote two letters home this last week but I am afraid that you won't get them and I will write a few lines more. I want some clothing just as soon as you can get it to me. I want a real nice striped or checked pair of pants if you han't started nary pair and if you have started arry pair you need not mind about sending any more. I want two striped or checked pair of shirts, a pair of drawers and a pair of socks. I want two pants, one pair of socks. I want one pair of real nice calfskin shoes, I want Dobbins to make them high heels and nice every way, narrow bottoms with the toes rather round. No. 8 will do. You know what sort will suit me. I need the shoes very bad. I am nearly barefooted. If George Griffin has started Leander Jolly will be coming soon and maybe Rice Roberson, for I have wrote to him that they wont reserve no more certificates for him. If I can get the shoes soon it will save me from paying out a good deal of money. 1 pair pants, 2 shirts, 2 pair of drawers, a pair of socks, 1 pair of shoes. Remember, I am a Lieutenant. I wrote all the particulars about my election as a Lieutenant. This Sun day is as windy as March. There is nothing new at this time. Every thing quiet. Give me all the news.
