  • May the 4th, 1862 Caroline County, Virginia Dear Friends It is with sadness that I seat myself to answer the letter that I read from home yesterday. I can inform you that I am enjoying better health at this time than I have this spring, though I have not altogether recovered from my bad state of health. I have wrote one letter home since we come to this place, but whether it will reach there or not I am unable to tell. I have nothing of much importance to write to you at this time. We are in camps 50 miles north of Richmond on the road that leads to Washington City within 12 miles of Fredricksburg which place the Yankies has possession of. And I suppose from all accounts they have a large force there. There are various rumors in our camp every day about the Yankies. Some times we hear that they are about leaving Fredricksburg and then again in a few hours we hear that they are advancing upon our troops. If they do, we have troops enough here to give them a pretty good fight, though I don't think that we could maintain this position long without fresh troops. We have got to picketing strong. It takes nearly a company out of our Regiment a day for
