March the 19th, 1862 Martin County, Hamilton, NC Dear friends it is with pleasure that I seat myself to drop you a few lines to inform you of my present situation. I am by no means well. I am able to walk about but my health is very bad. I cannot say for certain what ails me. I suppose it is being exposed so much and using bad water, I lay it more to the water than any thing else. I have used everything that I know to use to increase my health, but all has failed so far. I still think that I will recruit up before long. I read a letter from home last night that give me much pleasure. I can inform you that they was fighting two days last week within hearing of us. We expected to be ordered there every hour, but we were not. I have no doubt but what you will hear of the fight before you get my letter. I will only say that the result of the fight is that our troops was routed with the loss I suppose of about 300 men in missing and killed. We also lost one or two colonels. Our forces numbered about five thousand while that of the enemy was about 20 thousand, a very unequal fight. Our troops fell back about 10 miles up the river where they have been reinforced by about five thousand more men and the news is

In this letter of March 19, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to his friends from his location in Hamilton, NC stating that his health is very bad in part due to the water. The Yankies have taken Newbern. He voices his strong opinion about maintaining liberty and is only “willing to go back in the Union upon honorable terms and no others.” This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
