Haylie Long Staff Writer The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service offi- - cially declared the cata- mount, more commonly known as the Eastern Cougar, extinct this January. Catamount, cougar, aoe puma all selected in 1933. The Gouons for mascot were the Boomers or the Cata- pestenry: Boomers are e of grounds a a at are incredibly hard to catch, circ ntl could have shown our teams agility. It was an incredibly close match, but head football coach C.C. Poindexter selected catamounts because he wanted our teams to portray fierce spirit, savage attacks and lightning quick moves. The mascot was being chosen mainly for the sporting teams, but it also shows that our aca- demic pees is one ah is hard to catch up The Eastern Cougar was.so important be- cause it occupied every state east of the Missis- sippi River, which is a vast area for a species. Conservationists believe that the extinction will have a huge impact in the food chain. The last documented sighting of an Eastern Cougar occurred in Maine in 1938. It was killed and stuffed by a taxidermist. After that, it was As put : on ASE the endangered species list and wasnt officially seen again. There have been many rumored sightings since 1938, but none have been confirmed by officials. Hunting, trapping, deforestation and ae contributed between ears and prey in rural, unpopu- ated areas. Eastern Cou considered endangere because their popula tion decreased, but not so much as to consider them extinct. It took 80 years for them to be officially declared extinct. Extinction was first considered in 2015. Genetic testing showed that the wild cats that were still being seen in the Eastern United States were either re- leased or escaped from captivity. Other sight- ings of Eastern Cougars were cougars from the West that had started to move into the area no longer occupied by the eastern variation of the territorial cats. Conservationists main focus is to rebuild habitats. This will allow cougar populations to recover and in turn bal- ance out the food chain. The goal is to bring in cougars from out of the area and use them to repopulate the east. Many students were Bt that the animal: say that represented West- ern Carolina University was now extinct. TI was upset that Ive never had the chance to see one before. I didnt even really know they were considered an actual animal before I went here. Kristie Watkins Staff Writer In 2016, North Caro- - lina passed legislature that : would dramatically cut the | price of tuition for three public universities, West- ern Carolina University included. The drop to $500 for tu- ition pet semester has been | a subject buzzing around | the state, but now is finally on the brink of fruition for the new academic year tarting in August 2018. - The list of universities : includes the University of : North Carolina at Pem- : broke, Elizabeth City State : University and Western : Carolina. In the original : bill, there were two addi- : tional universities, but they : have since been removed. According to ncpromise. com, As home to the na- tions first public university, North Carolina has had a long-standing commitment : to educational opportunity : for all residents. The NC : Promise Tuition Plan reaf- firms the states commit- ment to make the university experience affordable and accessible to all. The plan will increase educational access, reduce student debt and grow the states economy. The drop in tuition ap- plies to all full-time stu- dents at these universities, even those who began their college careers before the fall of 2018. Students will not see a drop in other fees : such as housing and meal : plans, but the tuition cost : will drop to $500 a semes- : ter for in-state and $2,500 : a semester for out-of-state : students. Tuition costs will : be prorated for part-time ' students, but at this time : those specific numbers are _ still being decided. According to USAToday, | the average student loan _ debt in North Carolina is : $25,645. One of the main goals of NC Promise is to : lower or even eliminate the : amount of money students : are having to borrow, : decreasing the amount of : student debt. NC Promise will also the opportunity to before. : This will result in a larger ' number of qualified citizens : who can meet the needs : across the state. Although the tuition : price is going to drop, uni- : versities will not see a drop _ in adequate funding. The state of North ) Carolina will match dollar Photo by Nathaniel Evans/STAFF NC Promise tuition for dollar the difference between current tuition costs and the NC Promise Plan Tuition Plan cost. The end result is affordability for students without sacrificing quality, said ncpromise. com. The NC constitution states higher education. should be made available as free as is reasonably possible. The NC Promise Plan is striving to achieve just that. Western Carolina and the other two universities will likely have an increase in the number of applicants, which will likely make the admission more competi- tive. There has been some debate about if NC Promise will cause a negative im- pact, but the Western Caro- lina community believes it will be a positive result. The change is a sig- nificant one, particularly for students who depend on loans to pay for college and leave burdened with debt. At WCU, 81 percent of stu- dents are eligible for some type of financial aid,.and in 2014-15 alone our students and their families borrowed $63 million to afford col- lege. In the same year, our students graduated with an average loan debt of $20,575, WCU News. In addition to increased competitiveness in admis- sion, the Western Carolina community expects to be able to better recruit the best talent within the state as well as the border states since out of state tuition will now be more affordable. WCU News said another change that Western Caro- lina can expect to see is a growth in diversity. Low- ering the cost of in-state and out-of-state tuition at WCU opens the door for a diverse array of students ranging from the growing popula- tion of first-generation Latino students to rural mountain students, who for the first time will see college as a possibility, to in- ternational students. With that in mind, diversity at WCU is likely to increase in the coming years, bringing with it the kind of cultural exposure and perspective that will make our campus stronger and improve the educational experience for all students. Overall, the NC Promise plan is highly anticipated among current and incom- ing Western Carolina students and faculty.
